Rotary Engine Compression Tester
I got this idea off of a thread on the rx7forum.com, I've ordered the parts, and will let you know how it works...
Basically you get a pressure transducer, a serial A to D Data Acquisition unit, a sparkplug adapter to 1/4 ntp, and a laptop... For under $300 I think you can basically build a digital rotary engine compression tester!
Here are some links to get you started:
Setra 209 http://www.setra.com/tra/new/new_fc_209.htm#
Chart Recorder Starter Kit http://www.dataq.com/194.htm#
I ordered the 0-500 psi transducer from a supplier in Souther Cali, (see the sales offices for a place to buy one close to you. 500 psi should is a little overkill, but you never know what you could test in the future... They have a 250psi unit as well.
I'll report back when I get all the parts in and test my truck with it...
BTW, I had a very bad ping, think the front rotor is gone... the truck was never tuned correctly for colder weather, plus I just got done putting a front mount interecooler on, that dropped temps down, to where I don't think the ecu was tuned at all :(

Here's the thread as well

Looks like my buddy Blake is working on a complete unit as well.. If his comes out to be less than the DIY then go with that.. just have to wait until his is done

Works, bad engine
Just an update to this thread, I got the system to work about a month ago, and *front* rotor was gone.
I ordered a rebuid T2 from an 88 (rather than from a 91) and am in the process of putting it in.
If you're interested in getting a compression test via this method, just get the parts above and a laptop, and you'll be able to see the compression of each rotor :)

That pressure transducer is about $260 (gasp!) but I found one on ebay for about $50 (what the heck, all it is is a strain gauge thingee) but the chart recorder looks great for $25. the rest is just a 9v. battery (maybe a Zener to regulate it) and an A/D converter, all cheap from radio Shack.
All you gotta do is calibrate the gauge, but you figure a bicycle tire holds about 100psi so all you gotta do is jury-rig a shraeder or presta connector and calibrate against an accurate tire pressure gauge.
You can butcher an old spark plug for a fitting and braze on a suitable fitting (don't need an acetylene torch, MAPP will do, heck epoxy will probably do), probably for a swivel to spare dangling wires from the transducer.

or you can buy 2 old school paper testers off ebay along with 3 comp. hoses and 6 wiring sets all for under 250$ then i went and bought 12 paks of testing paper. I charged 50$ a comp test and made money in no time :)
