Max back spacing used?

Just wondering what is the max backspacing anyone has used, I am going to try 5 inches with a 9 inch wheel. I believe it should work with some of the wheel/tire sticking out of the fender. By the way, the wheel size I am going to use is 17x9 with a falken azenis 255/40-17 which has a .15 to .3 inch bulge on ether side and a 9.4 inch tread width.

Thanks for any input,
Kevin

I have a set of 16" wheels that I use and they have a 5" back spacing. I have had no problems with rubbing on the inside, but they are only 7" wide and don't hit the fender (just).
Good luck, Jeff

I would expect...

...interference with the front fenders, if not suspension, during hard cornering with those 17"x9" rims...

Well I changed my mind after doing some measuring. Because of the front fenders not sticking out as much as the rear I am going to use a 17x8 with 4.5 inch back spacing with a 225/45-17 so it will look better aesthetically compared to the rear.

Thanks,
Kevin

wheel spacing

I just picked up a REPU about a week ago and made some preliminary measurements... here's what I found:

Front-
2-1/2" from hub to fender lip (flush)
15" from fender lip to back of wheel well

Rear-
3-1/2" from hub(drum) to fender lip (flush)
11" from fender lip to back of wheel well (frame)

Luckily it looks like there is a lot to clearance for wide rims unless you go really wide, or small diameter.

My recommendations would start out at 7" wide in front w/ +25 offset. Rear would be an 8" wide w/ +12 offset. Lip and backspace will depend on the rim style and make, but I'm guesstimating about a 5" backspace for both front and rear.

Please don't take this as the absolute correct measurements, as I just took these measurements without raising the truck or removing the wheels, so they are just ballpark, but at least it gives a starting point.

Sounds like...

...a good 'initial ballpark'!

Now, depending also upon the particular style/brand/size of tire(s) run, as well as the particular wheels, I'd suggest a very close look at what will definitely clear the front fenders *and* suspension, under all possible extremes and combinations of cornering, etc.

You might wanna ask Brad, he knows!

Well I got the wheels in today and just for kicks I put the 17x9 with 5"bs upfront and it does fit. The only thing is that you would have to adjust the steering stop by about 1/4 to 1/2 inch because when you go to lock it hits the sway bar mount. You could also modify the mount so you would not sacrifice any turning radius, but in the end it would just be easier to go with the 8" wide wheel.

Thanks,
Kevin

What would happen under the extremes...

...of hard cornering/braking...? And, what about the added size/flex of the tire under those same conditions?

for comparison's sake

I auto-x my repu which uses 15x7 3.5" backspace 225/50/15 up front. Only thing it rubs is the front oversized sway bar at full lock.

Rear is 15x8 245/50/15 3.75 backspace no rubbing at all.

They do stick out a little for that skateboard look. I need to fab some wider mudflaps. Pics in gallery under Brad. It's the new white wheels with stripe.

Here are some pics of the truck at the autox where it took 1st out of 4 in the "Street Modified" classes. Had no rubbing issues at all, however I did make fender braces to support the front fenders just in case I hit a cone which push the fender out just a tad.

bolt pattern is 6x139.7 (metric) or 6x5.5 (std)
backspacing is around 4-4.5" in front and 5-5.5" in rear. (but i think you can go even deeper like around 6".)

if you read around, you'll see that there are a few things that can rub (from lock to lock) in front. so measure, measure, measure... good luck!

i forgot to mention...

that i'm running a set of 16x7 Volk Racing TE37X rims +39 offset all around. They needed 1/4" spacers to make them look better, but they still dont sit flush with the fenders. Not the ideal setup but finding rims with just the right offset have been extremely difficult. The rears would probably work better w/ 8s.

I dont get any rubbing on the fronts, lock to lock.
