What wheels you guys got?
Getting close to paint on my '74, eventually I'll have to think about replacing the rusted steel stock wheels. Just curious as to what options are out there, and what you folks that have upgraded the rims really like?

Wheels that worked for me.
This is one topic I can't understand among REPU owner, granted I'm somewhat of a newbie.
My particular REPU happens to be 6 lug. I have come to find out that most are 5 lug... Those I don't know much about, but the 6 lug I do.
The 6 lug pattern is a Chevy pattern... 6x139.7mm there are only about a million wheels made with that pattern. The 5 lug however, I'm not sure I can only assume it's 5x5.5 or 5x5.75, still very common.
Now to the part I don't understand... Size! Almost every REPU I see has 14" or 15" wheels. That just wouldn't work for me so I went with a 17x8. As far as the tires go I went with a 255/45/17. If you use the wheel size calculator on 1010tires.com the overall diameter of this combo is within 1/4" of stock size, however it's much wider. It works... unless your truck is lowered. I can't believe how well the truck handles with these tires.
Good luck!

tires and wheels
very interesting !
I have not compared them one against the other but it seems to me that the low profile setups would definitely handle better like you say .... but an old geezer like me ....?
I bet the original tires rode a mite smoother over potholes and the like !

REPU April Fool !
All REPU's ever made were 6-lug, stock... with 'reverse' threads on the driver's side lugs. Anything else is retrofit. The 6-lug pattern was also used by Mitsubishi, Isuzu, and perhaps Toyota...
I'll wager you have some sort of front suspension clearance/contact issues, under hard cornering/extreme tight turning... if you don't, I'd like to know how you circumvented that issue with what you're running!
(Bet you haven't autocrossed it like that!)

Brad,
What I don't understand is why you don't understand! LOL Some of us use these trucks as TRUCKS!... Not heavy hot rods! Those cute, super low profile tires may be nice for city streets and no loads, and look cool; but for heavy hauling & towing and / or gravel roads a wheel with some tire on it works better. It all depends on your personal application. BTW ..... My '77 RPU has regular right-hand thread lugs on the LEFT side as well.
Happy Rotoring,
Rob

O.K. ...
...I know nothing abvout the '77's; they must've changed the driver's side lugs for that year -- Unless, of course, you or a previous owner swapped 'em over... (?)
(One of my '74's got that 'treatment' due to a 'Courierization' of the front spindles by a PO...)

I had a '74 a while back and noticed the left hand threads on the passenger side wheel. The 77 I own now has right hand threads on all wheels. I always wondered??? Thanks.

lug
ok, 74-75 hand the left hand thread. 77 had all right hand thread and well the 76 I am not to sure, and well too lazy to go outside and check.
As for the 17" rims I am sure they look good and would like to see some pictures of them. I really want to know the exact size for a 15" rims to fit flush with the rear and front fenders. I am sure I will have to run a staggered setup but that is ok. my 2 repu's and charles repu's has a good size rim on the rear but the fronts of all 3 trucks stick out a bit past the front. The rears are 8" wide so maybe if I run a 7" wide on the front it will sit flush.

Take a look at the gallery.
At the "Brad C" group. That shows the 17" wheels. As fro the width, it may be a backspacing issue as well as a wheel width to keep them from sticking out. In my experience I've gone to my local Discount Tire on a slow morning and their pretty good about trying different sizes and backspacing on your truck so you can see what size will work. Once you find the correct size you just have to find a wheel that you like in that size and your good to go.
