I figured it out....

I've been kicking around the rack and pinion idea for a while.I was looking at pinto racks at first.First let me say that the main reason is with the 350 the rear steering interferes with the oil pan and exhaust. It works but the steering rubs the oil pan.A dirt track racer buddy said he had a rack for sale. It's called "sweet".It's about 18" long, uses heim joints and sleeves for tie rods.To convert it to frt steer,I took the steering arms off the spindles and flipped them,so far everything is lining up,the only problem so far is whether or not I can use the stock u-joint on the steering shaft.I'll post some pics when I get a little closer to being out of the woods.Looks like if it works I'll save at least 20-30lbs.Wait till you see my other mods in progress.

REPU RACK AND PINION

IT'S DONE,DON'T HAVE THE PICS YET BUT DROVE IT YESTERDAY.THE RACE RACK IS 1 1/4 TURN LOCK TO LOCK,VERY SENSITIVE.NO MORE SLOPPY STEERING AFTER 12 YEARS!

Cool!

That's gotta be the quickest steering on a REPU, ever! How much did the unit set you back, and approximately how many more $$$, and hours, did the conversion/installation require?

I bought the rack used with 2 steering u-joints(they cost $50.00 each new) for $150.00.The heim joints, tie rod sleeves, rack mount, steering shaft cost about $100.00.
I'll post some pics later. It took 2 weekends and 5 week nights.I'm taking it to work this week to line it up.

more details, picx, make a kit and sell it to the rest of us. i know CP racing did a rack n pinion bolt on kit for the 1st gen 7's. you should contact them and patent yours and have them market it, with a mazdarepu.com discount available of course.

congrats, job well done!

Well...

There's nothing fancy or special about the CP kit. At least their original design was just a 2nd gen rack with a custom mounting tray. No big deal, really, just that the way they provide it, there's no fabrication. Not knocking it or anything, but you could make one very easily and save yourself the cost of the kit.
