WTB: 1974 Wiring

OK guys- I need help and fast and BAD. I need a decent complete engine harness for a '74 (I know from trucks here that '75 & '76 are different), or at the very least an ignition relay and harness that taps into the engine harness and has the connectors to the ballast resistor assembly (ballast resistors would be a nice bonus, though I have new ones coming). Can anyone please help? I need it ASAP to get my truck back up and running. Willing to buy an entire harness from a truck if it makes things easier, if you have a whole truck harness, the year is not too important to me, so long as it isn't butchered at all. Please email me at kanseirotary at charter dot net or call 6162250780.

Neal.

Hey Kansei, I have a complete wiring harness that I know for sure is not a 77'. My mazda parts book is for 74 and 75 so I would say that they are the same but I'm not sure.Anyone wanna chime in on this one?

Well...

I know some early '75s are nothing more than 'rebadged' overruns from '74, but my later '75 & '76 are both different from my green '74. If the wiring harness you are sitting on is to your knowledge truly complete including all the subsidiary smaller harnesses that attach to it (relays and fuse box cover would be a real bonus), I'll buy it, if you'll sell it. Email me and let me know how much- I really want to get my truck back to a stock config. and on the road again.

I'm sure...

...I have the ignition relay/ballasts/etc. around here, *somewhere*, if you end up needing me to find 'em for you, Neal.

...(Points are such a giant step *backwards*; don't do it!)...

Echo that. I found an 84 RX7 dizzy and slapped that in, threw away the points stuff. Starts and runs 100% better.
If you want to know how, I started pretty much an 'numbnuts guide to dizzy conversion' on here somewhere. It took practially the entire REPU community to get me through it...although it's quite simple.

Does anyone have that guide? I've got an FB distributor, coils, ignitors, etc., I'd like to put in the 74REPU. At one time mazdatrix offered to sell me their guide for $5, a deal I should have taken, once I considered the problems of integrating into the existing harness.

I know, I know...:

I hear ya, Neal; understand you're looking to go back to 100% stock.

I found one set of stock resistors/mounts/coils/partial wiring yesterday... may or may not be complete enough for your purposes...

RE: 'Guide'-- Get a good condition 1st-gen E-dizzy, (NOT the year with the remote-mount ignitors--the one with them right on the dizzy!), ignitors, and coils; modify your alternator bracket/relocate mount by 1 bolt, and drop that sucker in; one of us has pictures of the (fairly simple) wiring detail for you...

GREAT!

Klaus- I'll take 'em! Whatever you have. Just email or call me and let me know how much to send you. Max hasn't gotten back to me yet- but I still want whatever you have too, Max! Same goes for you, Charles!

I am going to keep the electronic distributor that's already in the truck, but still need all the factory stuff to make that work properly, and I want to be able to go back to stock if I so desire. My truck is missing the ignition relay, ignition relay harness, ballast resistors, etc. The previous owner had an MSD-5 and MSD-6AL box wired in. Pulled those puppies out the other day. I also pulled the entire fron wiring harness out of the truck since the guy had butchered it so badly. I am going to transfer the harness from my blue '76 into my truck since it is here, already paid for, and apparently not cut up too bad. But the same ignition wiring is missing from that truck too!! WTF??!!?? Was that group of stuff a hot commodity back a few years ago or something?

I still want whatever anybody has and is willing to sell. Please keep the emails coming!!

Neal.

Biffle

Jut do a search for a thread with my name, all the info should be there.

One thing..I never hooked up any of the condensors..never figured out where they went on the new dizzy. Runs ok, what are they for anyway?

The electronic distributor doesn't use condensors, in fact they may be harmful. Condensors were incorporated into points systems to reduce arcing across the points when they open by providing energy storage for the collapsing magnetic field in the primary of the coil. The collapsing field in the coil secondary causes a useful spark across the plug gap, but arcing across the points merely erodes them and causes the points to fail rather quickly. You don't have the same problem with solidstate devices.

The old points system works OK, but only allows a plug gap of about .025 and requires regular maintenance, whereas the electronic system allows a gap of about .050 and requires no regular maintenance, just the infrequent replacement of a failed ignitor.

My 74 REPU runs fine on points (you just have to get the correct plugs, can't use the same plugs as the RX-7 because of the fixed gap). I'll convert it just as a convenience.

One advantage of points is that it is easy to Static Time the dist by simply setting at TDC, loosening the cinch bolt, put a 12v. bulb across the points, and wiggle the dist until the light just comes on, then cinch it down. Nobody has explained to me how to static time the electronic system. Static timing can sure simplify ignition problems.

Yeah...

I still want it, Max. Let me know via email (kanseirotary at charter.net) what you want for it.

...As for your other parts...:

The seatbelts I have stashed are a 'single retractor' (on the shoulder belt portion) version; 'manual adjust' on the lap portion. Overhead mount doesn't look quite as long as you described, either... (But, they *do* have the 'oldschool M' on the buckle!) Still waiting a definitive answer from Mike, as well--.

If they're not the one(s) you're after, O.K. by me -- I think I'd like to keep 'em --.

(I take it you hooked up successfully with that complete stock exhaust?) ;)
