Question regarding gauge cluster

I know this may seem like a stupid question, but here goes anyway. What is the Amp gauge supposed to do? I know there is a shunt behind the seat, but I have never seen my gauge move anywhere off the center mark. Is mine maybe broken? Should it be reading anything?

amp gauge

IMHO it is a fairly worthless setup.

Usually the amp gauge showes on the + side of center just after you start the engine, if it's not doing that your probably right it's not working. It can be used to troubleshoot load problems like bad starter (goes high on the + side when starter is activated) or alternator (always stays on the - side and battery dies)ect.

Amp Gauge

Hello mazdarx605; The amp gauge tells you how much electricity is moving and in what direction it's going.(into the battery or out of the battery.) It often doesn't work because one or both fuses on the cab backwall are blown or corroded. If they are good the the problem usually is corrosion where the gauge joins the cluster printed circuit. As Bruce says; "all in all it's fairly useless" and a nice add on volt meter would give you would give you more usefull information and improved reliability. You could make a really diligent search and find a volt meter that matched the REPU gauges, remove the ammeter and replace it with the volt meter in the cluster and it would look stock.

I think the amp guage will only work if the fuses are ok and you're using the stock alternator and voltage regulator.
