replacing the pinyon
Has anyone replace the pinyon gears or bearings at all yet in the repu? Are there other pinyons that are compatible for ex ford courier?

Hey Micah, i performed the torsen upgrade myself on my 77. I did not replace pinion bearings because it looked like too much of a headache. Pinion shaft good, no play, when doing the install. Might not be a bad idea to go to a junk yard and buy used differential assembly. May be a good time to change gear ratios on the ring and pinion.

Hey Micah,
Might be hard to find a REPU rear diff. I believe ford courier diffs will bolt right in. Not having any luck finding a good rear diff cross reference. Bill Voight will be at 7-stock and he probably has a cross reference for couriers.

ratio
Ford Courier
It looks like?
MT 1972/76 4.11:1 Ratio
MT 1977/78 3.64:1 Ratio
MT 1979/82 3.3:1 Ratio
AT all 4.37:1 Ratio
REPU
AT all 4.37:1 Ratio
MT 1974/76 4.65:1 Ratio
MT 1977 3.70:1 Ratio
I have an extra 4.37:1. I'm looking for a 4.11:1 or 3.90:1?
As usual anything you find you have to check.(who knows what might have been changed over the years)Mark the driver shaft have someone hold the other wheel still and you turn the tire around twice while counting the rotations of the driver shaft.

I'm currently wresling like hell to get my 3.90 out of my '77 housing. It's almost as if the ring gear was put in, then assembled inside the housing, like a ship in a bottle, because it just refuses to pop out. I'm putting a 4.625 in there, wvoigt, so I'll have a 3.90 if you want it.
By the way, any tips as to how to get the diff out of the axle housing?

Is it stuck, flange to flange? Or will it twist and jiggle?
I had one in a 81 rx7 that wouldn't come out. Hit it with rubber mallett, etc.... Ended up putting blocks of wood under the snout, then lowered the car so that wood was supporting the car a little bit. Next day it popped loose.
I assume you have the axles removed and all the carrier bolts removed?

Holy crap, that sounds a little drastic, using the weight of the car to get the diff out.
Yeah, I've got the driveshaft removed, axles popped out, diff unbolted, and plenty of clearance all around. I even rotated the whole 3rd member around in the housing to see if there was some orientation that had more room than any other. The axles are backed out far enough that they absolutely can't interfere. I just can't get the ring gear to clear the 10-bolt flange of the housing.

to micah ,the bearing needs to be pressed off ,keeping the gear set you have means you dont have to set the pinion shimming again .and if you do want new gears its nice to buy 2 new bearings 1 to oversize so you dont have to keep pressing the bearing on and off when setting up the pinion ,playing with tire size can be an easer way to change ratios and iphone has a hud app that can tell you how much the speedo is off.
