My 1974 REPU
Hello everybody. I was fooling around on the internet and saw this forum. I bought my truck in 1986 when I was 21. Love it and probably will never sell it. I personally installed a 1987 Turbo2 engine and adapted the fuel injection as well. It has a rib case 5 speed trans with 4.625 gearing. Wheels are currantly 15x7. The truck is lowered 1.5 inches and has Addco 1" front bar and 3/4 rear bar installed. It is very fast and gets 23 mpg on the highway. Took it to the drag strip last summer. At 6,000 feet altitude and 95 Degrees, it ran a 14.7 at 96.5 mph with lots of tire smoke. More mods on the way. I also have a 1993 RX7. I am a mazda technician and can help with most questions. I will try to get some digital pictures of the truck and engine soon.

I live in Morrison Colorado and certainly would like to see any other Colorado trucks here. I am active with SCCA autocrossing so sometimes the truck will be there. thanks for the welcome and any questions regarding my modifications are welcome. Also many futrue mods are being planned in regards to more power, better handling and better brakes.

I'm interested in any details about the TurboII conversion.... especially the tricky parts.

The Turbo 2 conversion is not super easy but I can go into most of the details. I used the engine, the entire wiring harness and computer from a wrecked car. I mounted the computer under the glove box in the package tray. One of the three plugs for the computer goes straight to the right side of the engine. The other two plugs go through the dash and fuse box of the rx7. This takes lots of time to clear the junk that you don't need. I used a holley external 70gph fuel injection pump mounted on the frame by the orig. pump. The fuel filter is a 1993 rx7 part. I did not think it was very feasable to use the T2 trans, and am relying on a rib case 5 speed. I did remove the bellhousing and installed the T2 bellhousing on it to use the rx7 flywheel and starter. I used the stock truck oil pan and front cover for mounting purposes. You have to drill and weld a pipe for the turbo drain. Also the oil metering pump from the turbo motor has different mounting holes that have to be redrilled and tapped. The clutch slave cylinder is repu with the rod shortened. I had to fashion a 3" u shaped intake pipe from the turbo inlet hose in order to mount the MAF sensor. No room to mount it in the stock location. I will try to get a friends camera and download the pictures of the conversion. PROBLEMS: The clutch is too weak. Cant use a T2 disk because the ribcase input shaft is smaller. I think I will have a custom disk made and install a lightened flywheel. The turbo is very close to the frame rail. The engine is very slightly angled to the driver's side for clearance. This has created any problems so far. Engine driven fans don't fit. Intercooler does not get much air. Thinking of a front mount although I am very interested in this water-air intercooler that someone is developing. Using the stock gas tank and below 1/4 full, it will starve under hard acceleration. Let me know of any other questions you guys have. Paul

Thanks!
I appreciate the info, Paul. If I decide to go back with someting other than the original 4-port, this is a swap that interests me. Like most of the swaps I've seen, having the WHOLE car is a really good idea.
Looking forward to those pics....
Scott.

Your REPU sounds nice. I was living in Colorado Springs when I picked up my '74 with a dead motor. I considered doing the turboII swap but as I started tearing out the old I got news that I would have to move to AZ for my job. I had to get it done as quickly as possible so I just put in the motor from an '86 and slapped a Weber carb on. When this motor starts to get tired I will seriously consider the turboII again. Wish I had a chance to see yours while I was still living there.
