Pretty crazy, huh?

Frankly, I'm shocked! $70 + $6 shipping, and the auction's not over yet... How much would the rest of us mere mortals have been reasonably willing to pay? I figured $40 tops!

Are there any replacement caps that anyone knows of available? From anywhere?

I don't think a cap made for '74 would also fit '77.

I also thought that until I found one of those caps on a 74 and relocated it to my 77. Other than a dab of grease to help the cap spin in the filler neck it screwed right in with no problem.

Seriously, guys...

..what if we could get 'em... what would be a reasonable price? And, who all wants one? (How many do we need?)

Count me in!!!

Reasonable $20-$25 I would think would be more than reasonable, but $77 is not what I call reasonable.

I hope the guy that got it has a really nice truck to put it on.

When I worked at an auto parts store, I looked up a locking cap for my truck and only found a '77. Do you know if a '77 will fit a '74?

Count me in too if anybody can find caps that fit. I would be happy with anything, locking or otherwise.

Call and see if part number 2459-42-550 is still available? Who knows there may be shelf full of them somewhere? Doubtful...

Of course any cap will suffice.

I was wondering how long it'd take you guys to notice that...or how long it'd take for one of us to 'go public' with that tidbit for the rest of us...! Now the key would appear to be locating a helpful, kind Mazda parts person who doesn't easily take "NO!" for an answer...
As yet unconfirmed report indicates 'some' still exist 'somewhere'... we'll see what we can find out...or if it's even the same, or they substitute a similar one...
Don't give up hope yet!
(I still want them to kick down the complete catalogue of what's still available, from anywhere, for all oldschool Mazda rotaries...!)

Non OEM replacement gas caps should be available from any good auto parts store.

Good luck finding new OEM stuff. Mazda has a bad habit of crushing old outdated inventory.

Crushing?!?!?!

I'll hold out hope that that's just the story some Mazda guys put out there... that would just SUCK! "Planned obsolescence 101..." My friendly local parts guy at the dealer said it's a vehicle-specific order from Japan, and required I give the VIN #... I laughed and said, "which VIN should I give you?"
We'll see what shows up.

Gas cap

The same gas cap was offered for the Courier also, might be one at your local Ford dealers.Wasn't stock on the REPU was an option, as were the lower viny stripes.

Klause, it's not a "story", unfortunatly, it is FACT!I worked for Mazda for several years, and they would scrap obsolete parts! Even whole cars!

I was in Jacksonville FLA at the Mazda facilities there, and they had about 150 brand new 1981 model vehicles that had "salt damage" from their trip across the Pacific. We couldn't even get a steering wheel off one of the cars! Every one of those cars went to the crusher!

My friend did mange to get into the lot with the "damaged" cars. He took every fuse, and fusible link he could get from every car he could! (His pockets looked like chipmunk cheeks they were so full of stuff.) He said if we couldn't get anything off them, then they were going to have to work to crush them!

When Mazda moved the facilities from JAX, they sent tons of new parts to the crushers!

Believe me, it really happened!

Can you just see a fork lift loading a couple boxes of REPU grills and outer bezels in a hopper destined for scrap?

Maybe that pallet of fenders!

Lets throw in a couple of louvers for and RX3sp's.

Oh yeah, get those R-100 bumpers tossed in.

Crunch,Crunch,Crunch..

Yup, ol Rotor has been telling me that story for years. It makes me sick every time I hear it. I mean I can just see some bean counter insisting "nothing can be kept for insurance reasons"

Good News!

That cap IS still available...albeit without the oldschool "M" logo keys. The rubber grommet is also still available for between the filler neck & body! However, these are "VIN-specific" orders from Japan... My friendly local parts genius was able to get 'em for me. Good luck you guys!
