steering box R&R?

Anyone have a step by step for how to remove the steering box in our trucks?

Did the box get removed Jeff?

Anyone have replacement parts for the steering box? After searching online everywhere, and searching Mazda's parts inventory the only new part I found was a gasket. Couldn't find any other Mazda parts supersessions either.

Anyone know if courier uses the exact same box?

From the MAZDA factory shop manual:

1. Put truck up on jackstands
2. Loosen the bolt securing the worm shaft to the steering joint.
3. Remove cotter pin and castellated nut attaching the center link to pitman arm.
4. Disconnect center link from pitman arm using a ball joint puller
5. Remove the screws attaching the insulator to the pitman arm and remove the insulator.
6. Remove the bolts and nuts retaining the steering gear housing to the body. At this point, check for the possible presence of aligning shim between gear housing and body.
7. Remove the steering gear from the vehicle.
8. Have an Asahi beer ;)

Thanks for posting that. I still have some questions. Does it mention anything about removing the brake master cylinder for easier access? Is it necessary?

Also is there another way to disconnect the centerlink? I don't have a balljoint puller.

I don't think our trucks have an insulator on the driver's side. I know there is one on the passenger side. Is that what they mean? Is that the pitman arm? If so, why does it need to come off? It's all the way over there.

brake master not mentioned at all and i doubt it's necessary since the steering box is on the outward side of the frame rails and down low.

it's a tapered press fit, gonna need a puller. i bit the bullet years ago and bought a sweet one from sears that's never failed. they can be used on so many other things & are great to have. any place rent them?

i couldn't find any insulator on the drivers side schematics. no pictures of it, dunno what it really is. i'd say just pull the box and keep an eye out for it.

well, since most REPU steering boxes are well worn

And mine is also all out of adjustment, I did some more research on it.

Called Lee Manufacturing in SoCal, they said they can rebuild the box and they should be able to get worm gear and sector shaft if needed too for additional cost. They have a great parts source they said. He even knew the Courier and B1600 use the same box. They just need to take it apart and see what's in there.

So Jeff, if your steering box is out this might be the way to go. He said just ship it to them and they'll rebuild it and call you to ask how to pay. ;) They'd even see if another ratio is available once it's apart!!!

Standard rebuild seals included, w/o any hard parts is $220 and they magnaflux everything. Equivalent to blueprinting.

Hi Jeff,

How did the R&R go? Did the box get rebuilt?
