If you had to have buckets I'd look for sothing out of a CRX or something. I'm looking at leather buckets for the Miata, which I htink are going for $350 a piece new. Those have such a thin back that they shouldn't cause a lot of trouble.
Alas, my '77 is 97% complete and original. I had visions of a custom interior and TII conversion but that seems somehow heretical now :) A good problem to have I suppose. Even my bench is in good enough shape to reupholster. Maybe I'll chance across another REPU in the near future that isn't so 'together' and I can play with that one.
