spare tire removal

I am having a hard time removing the spare tire. I'm assuming I need to rotate the bar counter clockwise? The first time I tried to remove the wheels I thought I was screwed also.

Yeah, the lug nuts on the truck are quirky... If it bugs you, there are usually auctions for replacement standard thread studs available on ebay for the Ford courier... The OEM Ford ones are actually made by Mazda, but I'm sure the aftermarket ones from doorman and the like are fine as well.

On my truck, to release the spare I turn to the right first to release the ratchet, then it lets you turn to the left to drop the spare. You'll feel or hear a click when turning to the right which I assume is the mechanism that locks the wheel into place releasing.
