IS 74 CARB EXEMPT????????

I HAVE A 74 REPU AND WANTED TO KNOW IF ITS CARB EXCEMPT? I LIVE IN CA SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE SAID THAT ONLY 73 DOWN. I ALSO ASK DMV AND THEY WERE NOT EVEN SURE???????? HOW BOUT THAT. ANY WAYS I ALSO HEARD THAT AFTER 2003 ALL CARS OLDER THAN 30 YEARS WOULD BE EXCEMPT. SINCE A TRUCK IS SOMETIMES THOUGH OF A COMMERCIAL VHEICLE WOULD IT BE EXCEMPT OR CUT A LIL' SLAK ON THE EMISSIONS? THIS WOULD BE A GOOD TOPIC TO TALK BOUT........

CA. DMV? You have my sympathy...

Sorry to hear yer up against the CA b.s. If the DMV can't/won't tell you, go up the ladder until you can 'get it in writing'. Better yet, find a way/place to go to avoid paying them at all... A commercial vehicle is defined as such by it's being registered as such... kinda like a 'motorhome', or motorcycle, or boat, etc... It usually costs even WAY more, nevermind the extra insurance costs, too.
Ever consider moving to OR., NV., or AZ. ???
P.S.-- Assume it's exempt until they say it's not, tyhen challenge their 'new' judgement call, and be prepared to back up your position by documenting that it's ALWAYS been exempt. Is/wasn't this REPU a 'farm truck', and never run on the hiway? (Hint, hint) Good Luck!
PPS--DMV NEVER cuts slack... but you may be correct that anything 30+years old is considered "antique" or 'classic', officially...perhaps you can go that route...

The age here in GA is 25 years. You can apply for a special antique licsense and your home free.
I had heard that an exemption is available when requested out there. I am not sure of the process which you go thru. But, the farm truck idea or low mileage vehichle idea might get you thru till your truck is 30.

Well then there you go. Tell them (DMV) that you use your REPU to haul turnips out at the Sunday Farmers Market.

Feel for you yellow

Hey, Yellow, I know your problem because I live in Orange County CA, and would wish that I didn't have to worry about smog. If it is 30 years, you are closer to it than me, I have a `77. I have pics of it on the gallery page. Last time I passed by disconnecting the trailing lead, but prefer not to keep doing that. If you want, there is a place in Garden Grove that may be able to help you pass smog. There is a guy there that knows the rotary very well. Let me know if you are interested, and I'll give you details.

Never volunteer anything!

Let 'em assume all they may at the DMV...if they never notice it's a REPU on paper it might be half the battle...let 'em go on thinking it's a piston-pushing b-series truck, or whatever. As soon as you encounter paper problems or beaurocratic resistance to things rotary, walk outy and pick another DMV office... one where they're either too busy or too dumb to notice a 'detail' like that... Besides, if money talks, those fees you get stuck with in Cali. oughta get you outta there in style with the worst-polluting dog of an oil-burner anyone'd ever wanna drive...(Ha!) What if: You tune your motor to a 'T', clean the engine inside using a can of Amsoil 'power-foam' (the stuff really is great!), lean out your mixture beyond what you'd want to drive on, disconnect the metering oil lines, and pre-mix a tankful of the best gas with the smallest amount of the highest-quality synthetic 2-stroke oil...
Would that pass CA. emissions??? If not, perhaps it's time to spend $400 on a hi-flow catalytic converter setup....
P.S.--I also hear very good things about "techron"--the kind in the bottle--and how it can clean up/out a rotary...

Emissions...ugh. Thank goodness here in Nebraska there is no emissions testing...no vehiclular inspections of any kind (which can be interesting to see what people consider road-worthy). But when i titled my truck here, the DMV didn't even know what a REPU was. I think my title says "Mazda Pickup Other"

I had a title for a REPU once the lady thought I said it was a 2 cylinder. So thats what she put in the little area on the title for the engine size. 2cylinder.

cats? meow

WELL WHEN I BOUGHT MY REPU IT WAS A LITTLE ON THE MODIFIED SIDE. IT HAS A RB HEADER WITH DUAL EXHAUST FROM THE HEADERS ALL THE WAY TO 2 MUFFLER. ALSO IT HAS 2 GLASS PACKS. NO REACTOR, EVEN THE CARB IS MISSING SOME VACUM HOSES WICH I DON'T HAVE AN IDEA HOW TO INTALL THEM. THE MOTOR NEED A REBUILD BUT I REALLY NEED TO REGISTER IT UNDER MY NAME FIRST & TO DO THAT I NEED THE SMOG. DOES ANY ONE KNOWS A COUSIN THAT KNOWS AN UNCLE THAT KNOWS A FRIEND THAT KNOW ANOTHER FRIEND OF THE NEIGHBOR THAT LIVES ON THE STREET OF THE FRINED THAT CAN DO THIS SMOG FOR ME?????

Sounds like a proper RB exhaust!

...and those things you call "glasspacks" are the presilencers...I hope. Actual glasspacks will disintegrate in 4K miles or less, clogging your muffler...the setup you describe is called a 'road race' header front section, and the 'dual exhaust' all the way to the muffler is the preferred setup ('long dual primaries') for high RPM power. I'd suggest that if you're still running the stock intake manifold, that the stock (or rx4) reactor heatshield will still mount up to it--camouflaging the header somewhat--and allowing you to attach the 'pre-heater' hose to the original air filter can... You may actually benefit slightly from the heat shield being in place as well... As for the 'missing' vacuum lines: leave 'em off! Just make sure the caps are'nt aged & brittle--you want them plugged tight! The DMV you're looking for most certainly won't be in a major metro area... perhaps some of your local piston-hot-rod boys can offer some advice... if your local rx7 rotorheads don't know where to go... Can't you get it put in your name while it's still a "non-running" project that you're restoring??? They can't smog what 'doesn't have the motor installed yet'... Seriously. tho--what state border are you closest to? (hint)

Register as PNO.

Hey Yellow. I just got my REPU from my dad. I also have to deal with this SMOG bullcrap. the law goes like this. Any car 73 and before is exempt. after 2003 any car 30 years old is exempt. in 2004 you should be good to go. I have to wait till 2005. anyway what you could do for mean while is try and chenge it to your name by registering it as "Planned Non Opreation". You can't drive the truck this way or park it on the street but you could at least change it to your name. then when you get it running ask around for some one who will hook you up with the SMOG Check. Only a couple more years till complete rotary freedom.....

thank every1!!!!

Thanks to all for the info, i think i'm going to to have to put it has "pno". it had $434 woth of due fees, so i have paid them. This would also give me time to really get her going the way it has to. I will need a full rebuilt, may be a street port or even a bridge port? I will try to get a full stainless steel dual exhaust with a rb header. I have a rb/webber 48 intake, but its for a 12a not for my 13b. So if anyone has an adapter for a 12a manifold into a 13b motor that would be great. hope to get some pic soon.
