Bone-stock setups
Hey guys,
I was interested in hearing from the folks with bone stock setups (carb, engine, etc).
Wondering what sort of fuel economy you were getting and what sort of hauling you've been able to do.
I haven't gotten to the point where I have to decide just yet, but being as tho my truck is 99% complete I bounce back and forth between doing a faithful restoration, mild custom, crazy shit, etc. I know this is something we all struggle with, just thought I'd get an everyday driving impression from those of us who drive a completely stock setup. I know what a ported TII with haltech and exhaust can yield :)
Thanks.

I got some.....or almost.....
they are my 77 and a 74, all stock motors with only a headers and emissions removed. They get 18 mpg, consistantly. With the 77, I hauled a full load of bricks even with the top of the bed. and it scooted no problem. Stopping was a bit of a different story though.
But I have to admit I like driving my ported 74 truck better. I like the accelleration, and torque much more. It is so much more fun.
Stock is cool, but I like better performing motors. I'm doing a 75 with a TII motor for more fun.
A higher performance motor, brakes, suspension, and electronics gets my vote with a fairly stock looking chassis.

Could all depend...
...on your driving style, as well... in terms of mileage, anyway! I get worse mileage than that with my j-spec 4port, RB header, emissions removed, stock carb.... of course the early rx-7 5-speed drops first even lower... and I have a propensity for lead-footing... :)
If you're driving it for max. mileage, chances are it's wishing you weren't!
I'm not running too lean, either...
Far as hauling goes, I've had the bed filled flush+ with crates of records--you know, the heavy vinyl '70's kind-- and it hauled all, no problem... but I hear ya on the brakes!

17 mpg
factory exhaust (of course its new), stock block, 77 5 speed ribcase and electronic ignition. Originally had a heavy camper shell and old heavy bumper, it would haul a full load of camping gear and two full size jet skis. No problems with the hills as long as nobody got in my way. Like Klaus I have an oversized right foot.

My near stock '77 also had a super heavy camper top on it (now thankfully gone). I've also hauled i think 12 packs of roofing shingles. That sure sagged the back end down. I had no problem getting moving. but, like others, braking was more of a concern. I just wasn't confidence inspiring.
The only time i was lacking in power was coming over the Rockies with the camper on. I couldn't maintain 5th gear. But i'd attribute most of that to the altitude.

I let a friend drive my red '74 while I was the passenger. We towed a baja and a bed full of VW stuff. Hmm, two engines, several sets of tires, lots of other stuff, and even the baja was fully loaded with stuff.
My truck did as well as could be expected. The fuel pump is undersized and usually runs the carb out of gas in third on level road or 2nd floored up a hill. Heh, towing that huge load caused the carb to run out in 1st driving slowly up a hill. The temp also got up to half on the guage. Normally it would hover around 2/5. The fan is from a 1st gen (16" diamter), but with a '77 shroud (18" opening), so the fan isn't quite as efficient as I'd like it to be. It still did pretty well. Oh yeah, the rotor housings are missing a lot of chrome, so the overall power output is quite a bit less than if it had new housings (I was very disturbed looking through the exhaust ports).
I'd say my truck was overloaded that day, but maybe it wasn't? These trucks seem to have enormous payload capacity for their size and age. Ahead of their time I suppose. :)
