newbie questions

This may seem dumb.I have yet to get my REPU but have been looking at pictures of it(i have yet to see the truck in person),and have noticed a few things on the bed that I have questions about. What is the bow tie shaped hole in the middle of the rear valence for?Spare tire winch, license plate light(w/o bumper),or other? Also what are the rubber bumper looking things for below the hinges? Are they there to hold up the tailgate or aid in holding it?I thought the tailgate would be held up by chains.I guess one more question. Is the bed a double wall construction(tailgate too for that matter)or are these trucks before that sort of thinking?Sorry if these are stupid questions.I can't wait to get the truck.Oh yeah this is a 74 REPU w/factory air conditioning;-)

1. Spare tire rod goes in there. Like the spare tire winch will actually turn after 30 years!!! Be sure to spray it with Castrol Super Clean to clean and PB B'laster to lube it up.
2. Bumperettes for reducing impact-damage.
3. Tailgate IS heald up with rubber wrapped chains.
4. Bed is alas only single wall construction which contributes to body damage, as is tailgate. But tailgate has 3 stiffeners on it you can put your stuff on and slide and not damage tailgate.

Good questions. 74 has the ultra-short 4.65 ring and pinion to let the motor zip on up quickly. LOVE it! If you wanna sell the factory A/C let me know

I've also become quite good at rust removal and repair, feel free to bounce question's off me.

"Bumperettes" indeed!

...to reduce impact damage from tailgate when un-chained, but only work in the absence of a back bumper! (Hence the all-too-common center-of-tailgate scar from unchaining and dropping on the bumper...) Nice idea, though...
