rotarty into 4runner?

Noob here.
I'm looking for candidates for an engine swap for my 84 4runner. Has this been done before. Can anyone point me in the direction of adapters, etc?
Sorry for the moronic question

So, out of your 225 collective brains, nobody knows anything about this? I guess it's impossible.

Nothing's impossible.

Nothing's impossible.

It'll be like any other swap: You'll need to do a shitload of welding and fabrication.

No one replied because no one's done it or thought about doing it. Its not the most common swap in the world.

If you're sweet on the idea go for it (we've all got crazy ideas) but if its easy you're looking for, rebuild a 22R and slap that in there. Direct bolt-in, more torque and horse (N/A or forced induction).

I like those bodies (and that removable topper thing) so its probably worth doing SOMEthing with. What is going to depend on how ambitious you're feeling.

Right, nothing is impossible

When doing the swap, these are the things to be aware of:

1. transmission would have to be a Mazda, or you'd need to fab an adapter for the Toyota tranny

2. Driveshaft needs to be fab'ed up if you use a Mazda tranny

3. tranny mounts neet to be fab'ed if you use a Mazda tranny
(Using a Mazda tranny may still be easier than fab'ing a adapter plate, I don't know for sure)

4. engine mounts need to be fab'ed, maybe a subframe from a RX-7 doner car can be adapted?

5. If fuel injection is used, you'd need to get the ECU and harness from the RX-7 too.

6. upgrade fuel pump

7. upgrade cooling system

We have a shop in Vegas that does a ton of Rotary Swaps, http://rotoy-performance.com Give them a call!

If you want to maintain 4WD, you would be best having a trans. adapter to mate to the Toyota box. Never was a 4WD rotary vehicle. Somebody may have done the adapter. I have heard of a Suzuki Samarai with a ported rotary. Scary idea! Just think of the rollover RPM that little bugger could achieve!

I new a guy that, Ken Durkey from Mazdas and More (formally Rapid Rotary) that took a 4-WD B-2600 and converted it to a 13-B. I believe he used the tranny from the B-2600 and adapted it to the engine with the bell housing from a rotaty trans. Good luck with the conversion.

Never say never....

Seem to recall a famous rally racer driving to victory in a 1st-gen rx-7 that had been converted to 4WD via a mazda 626 front wheel drive section... or did I just dream that?

I remember that truck. It was back in '92-'93ish I think.

Ken is doing another 4x4 right now. Or, he would be if he could find a ribcase clutch fork. I'm not sure what make it is though. 4runner maybe?

Sorry to be a smarta$$, but that usually gets some replies when a thread dies out. Thanks for the info. Without an adapter in production to go between the rotary and the toyota trans it's not really worth it to me. Welding and fabbing all the other stuff is no problem, but I'm not a machinist and cant do a eng/tran adapter. Thanks anyway. I'll stick w/ the 22r.

THere are places that do the adapters, almost anything to anything. In fact there was someplace online but I apparently don't have hte URL anymore.

Much as I hate to say it its hard to go wrong with that 22R. I mean any other motor and I'd say try your luck but the 22R is a darn good motor by any standards.
