Fuel Injection / Turbo Info Needed

I'm fairly new to the whole rotary scene, however I'm loving it and want to learn more. I picked up 74 with a Street Ported, Pineapple Racing motor. It's got a single webber side draft on it like I'm sure most of you have. I'm very interested in fuel injection and eventually a turbo, however I know nothing about whats available in the rotary world. I'm a small block chevy guy....
Anyone got any leads or tips I'd love to hear them.

If what you've got runs well...

...keep it together and enjoy it for what it is. If you want an injected, turbo'd motor, build that one seperately, to properly handle the boost, from the get-go. :)

Look up...

Racing Beat in Anaheim... www.racingbeat.com

Atkins in Puyallup... www.atkinsrotary.com

--Those two have LOTS if info/experience beyond what's on their sites!

...I'm assuming you already know all about Rob/ www.pineappleracing.com ...

...then there's Hayes, Mazdatrix, etc., etc., etc.

...Don't forget the Mazda Factory Racer support program; you might wish to compete in a few autocrosses, etc., to qualify yourself...

Welcome Brad!

I'm fairly new to this truck site myself, but I've been building wankel engines since '84. You are probably not quite on with your assumption that most of us are running "street ported" engines with Weber side-draft carbs. Actually there are a lot of different induction systems available for the Mazda rotary with the side-draft Weber being one of the lesser used. The fact is the original 4-barrel carbs offered by Mazda were excellent units and are quite satisfactory for most uses for the trucks. May after-market induction systems worsen the already lacking low-speed torque characteristic of the Mazda rotary and increase fuel consumption. Fuel injection is best with 4-barrels of carburetion being next best in providing good low range power while still providing adequate volume for the high-RPM range. What you will want for an engine will depend on how you use your truck and what rear gear you will use. For example, my '77 RPU is used for light hauling right now; and to commute 100 miles per day to work on a two-lane highway. I run a 4.11 rear gear from a Ford Courier and built the engine with an "enhanced" '74/'75 size porting configuration. This gives me good torque at about 3,000 RPM but breathes well at over 7,000. A "street port" Mazda rotary will usually begin to develop good useable torque at about 4,000 RPM ...... If your truck has the original 4-speed rear gear, it is a 4.62 and that higher revving engine may be OK, but still wouldn't be ideal for heavy towing. If you still have the 4-speed trans and the 4.62, you will definitely want to change to a 5-speed box. There is lots of help on this site for doing that. The great thing about turbo-charged engines is that they develop their torque / power and a much lower rev. Thus you could run a higher rear gear for increased gas mileage and lower engine wear, while maintaining good pulling power. However thermal management is always a challange with turbo'd engines.
Just a few comments that might help get your thinking started. I see you own a sign business... I'm sure you will find your unique Mazda RPU a great eye-catching sign, itself, for your sign shop. Be sure to post any question you have on this sight. There are lots of knowlegeable folks here anxious to help you out.

Happy Rotoring.....

Rob

Dan / Rob

Thanks for the info, I have alot to learn and any bit helps.
My truck will be used for occasional warm weather driving(since I ripped out the heater core and controlls), maybe some autocross and a bit of drag strip stuff. By no means will I be driving it daily so fuel consumtion is not a concern, I just want it to go fast. I do infact have the 5-speed with a factory rear end. At some point I'll figure out an LSD, however I've got alot of work to do before I can get there.
Does anyone have any experience with the Camden Supercharger from Atkins? I've never talked to them but turns out there only about 20 minutes from my house.
Thanks,
