Where do I start?

Hello guys,

I have been away from the forum for far too long, but I am back now.

I have recently moved to a new home that has a 2 car garage(a little undersized I think, but bigger than my last garage which was no garage),and I want to restroe the REPU.

My question is where do you guys think I should start? The body is in great shape, but it could use some tlc,and paint. The motor is a fresh rebuild a few years ago with only around 1-2k miles on it.The exhaust is a piece of junk cobbled together system. The ignition is the same(1980 RX-7 electronic) cobbled together system that isn't right I don't think. The e-brake setup is crap at best, and rubs on the lousy exhast which can be cured with a few notches pulled on the handleto take the slack off.The carb was rebuilt when I got it,but that seems rough too.It runs very rich.Rich to the point of burning your eyes if you are outside near the back of the truck at times.

Any help on this would be appreciated.I have a factory shop manual, but the wiring for the ignition is not in it.Thanks in advance.

P.S. In case you want to see my truck it is in the Misc section of the photo gallery. It is the 6th-9th pics across the top.

Chris, why not start by..:

...doing all those 'little' things to make her run well, reliably, first? After all those issues are squared away, you can tackle the bigger 'restoration' type issues, knowing when you re-assemble you'll be able to drive...

If the e-dizzy you have has the remote-mount ignitors --not mounted on the dizzy-- you need to scrap that setup for the one that has 'em on the dizzy... if not, that's likely not a source of unfixable issues... I seem to recall there were some threads detailing/picturing the wiring? Perusing older threads might be a good start...

The exhaust, well... it's simple enough: RB header, properly installed using heavy-wall ex. pipe, and as straight a shot as possible all the way back, to the best, least-restrictive, rotary pulse withstanding muffler you can afford...(RB is once again offering the 'Power Pulse' muffler... likely well worth the investment! One of 'em can apparently be flipped over to fit back of REPU's...) :)

You MUST fix your fuel issue! Which carb. are you running? Could be as simple as a stuck float, or a clogged inlet needle/seat...? I hate working on/in fuel and solvents, anymore... but that aside, they're not that tough. Just gotta be clean, clean, clean, and pay attention to all those little details! Easy enough if you're obsessive and detail-oriented...

Pretty important to take care of that fresh rebuild you've got... since it's hardly broken in, yet! Must not compromise existing investment... !!!

Thanks for the input Klaus.

I have the remote mount ignitors on the dizy currently, but have a few 1st gen 12A,and 13B dizys in my stash.I think maybe the ignition is the best thing to work on first, like you said.

I already have the racing beat(I think)header on it,and I could maybe use the power pulse unit from my RX-7 that is really rotting away(the body).

As far as carbs go I have the stock Hitachi, and I did rebuild it when I got it a few years ago,but the accelerator pump rubber bellows at the top of the carb is all cracked, and a new bellows did not come with my rebuild kit,so that may be an issue.

I forgot to mention I also have a slight clicking noise coming from the rear end when I am on the brakes, but I am not sure what that is yet.Any ideas? Also when I got the truck the horn did not work, and I wasn't even getting the relay to click.I fixed that shortly after I got it,and got an inspection, but now the relay clicks, but no horn.I bought a couple of used REPU horns on e-bay a few years ago.I also noticed there was only one horn on my truck. Is there supposed to be two? Thanks again.

I will be on here more often I am sure, but it may be a little spotty this week while I have the DSL installed at the new house.I will only be on when I get a chance at work.

Definitely, replace the -proven problematic(!)-...

...ignition, first! Those 'remote-mount' igniter ones were prone to cross-triggering... potentially very bad for a good, fresh motor!
The accelerator pump 'bellows' is a minor detail, there to keep dirt out. More important is every single internal...!
*What about tank to intake system cleanliness? Fuel delivery pressure? These are crucial, too!
Check your wiring/horn button/electrical connects... all inclined to be troublesome before the horn itself, IMHO...
*As long as nothing in your exhaust has disintegrated/clogged flow... sounds like you can leave it 'til ignition/fuel issues are dealt with, first!
Clicking from your rearend could be a number of things... inspect brakes, u-joints, differential gear lube contents/condition... etc., etc. ... look for potential sources, up-close and personal, with back up on stands, wheels off... could be minor/inconsequential; could indicate important needed ?
