Ordered replacement bushings, etc.

This weekend from AutoZone I ordered replacement bushings, ball joints, tie-rod ends, and a few other front suspension normal wear parts I have forgotten. All this for a combined total in the low $400's! For that kind of money I better be really impressed with the handling of this truck after I am done.

any comments on what I should expect once I get started with this project? How much time will it take to replace the bushings? Any special tools I am going to need?

After I finish this project next up will be to install the Racing Beat header that has been sitting in my closet since last SevenStock.

Part Numbers

Could you post the part numbers? It'd be great to just go down to Autozone with the numbers in hand and order them.

Are those the Japan-made parts...

...or the US-made versions? As to how 'impressed' you'll be: remember also how much difference your choice of shocks, tires, sway bar, and bushing material will make... (You'll love your header exhaust!)

depends on how worn existing bushings/ball joints are

that determines how much of an improvement you'll see. suspension won't be as vague or 'wander by it's own' as much. i've read here and talked to REPU friends that suspension wasn't as tight as they wanted for spending all that dough, but what can you really expect for a thirty year old 5/8 ton truck?

i don't think you'll need any special tools since it's a dual a arm front suspension with bolt in ball joints. be sure to spray the nuts and bolts with P B B'laster for a few days beforehand so they'll come off easier.

The leaf spring bolts are on there real tight and some shackel bushings sometimes compress together and dont wanna come off the shackel. Lock jaws, more P B B'laster, and a vise fix that.

Just 12 leaf spring bushings and two shock absorbers. Mazda sells the bushings for five bucks each. I posted pics and part number (from craig, thanks again craig) on another thread in the suspension section.

Be sure to lube the leaf bushings with white lithium grease inside and out. Loosly tighten shackel and leaf spring front spindle nuts, lower truck and bounce it a few times then Torque per shop manual specs.

Yeppers. Also sometimes rust or rocks get inbetween the leafs and SQUEAK; but it's usually just the bushings.

Well I just got all the bushings and stuff that I ordered. No upper a-arm bushings because AutoZone doesnt have them. Napa does though so I will get them hopefully tomorrow!

I will go through and post a list of part numbers and descriptions some time this weekend.

Here is a list of what I have so far:

FB515 x4 bushing
FA1352 x1 chassisparts
FA1157 x2 balljoint
FA1176 x2 balljoint
SL75 x2 miscchassis
ES2729S x2 tierods/sleeves
MOES2073L x2 TIE ROD ENDS
RP26274 x2 TIE ROD ENDS
ES2414 x1 tierods/sleeves

The FB515 I believe were the lower a-frame bushings.
FA1352 I think is the sway bar bushings
SL75 I dont remember what that bushing is
the rest is all the tie rod and tie rod end parts. ES2414 is the entire center rod that goes all the way from tie rod to tie rod. I still dont have the upper a-frame bushings, will have to order them from NAPA.
What I have so far was nearly $400 from AutoZone. I dont think I ended up with any extra parts but will post about it in a couple weeks if I do have any extra or missing parts.

Dont buy that center link that I had listed, it is the wrong one. It is exactly the same but about 3" too short, I am guessing it is for the piston trucks. Now that center link is the only thing left and I am done with the front suspension. Kind of sucks to look at the REPU on jack stands and know that I only have about 15 minutes of work to finish her up, but I could be without the part for another couple weeks.

Speaking of wrong center links, anybody know where I might be able to find a replacement? Nothing shows up on carparts.com, or checkerauto.com. Any other places to look?

Be aware of this.....

Upper ball joints,5 min.,lower ball joints,5 min.,upper bushings 30 min.idler arm,and steering linkage=gravy.Lower control arm bushings=BITCH.Somewhere between 2 hours and all day. Those lower control arm bushings SUCK.Good Luck.

PS I didn't replace my steering stuff. The truck drove almost the same before and after.
I'm still looking at converting to rack and pinion. If I still had a pair of rotors under the hood it would be easy.I've figured most of it out though.I'll let you know when I make the commitment.

center link

Tom, I checked to see if parts were available from mazda to rebuild the center link, the only thing you can get are the bushings that go to the idler arm. I can`t find anyone who offers this aftermarket. I can see only two choices, a used link from a low mileage donor vehicle or see if its possible for a machine/welding shop to add three inches to the piston version link.

I think I will try a machine shop, see what they say. It seems to me like the part would have some stress on it but mostly stretching and squeezing. Shouldnt be too much to weld something that can withstand those 2 directions of force.

I want the full-custom...

proper, if not 'billet' version... not a kluged-together fix... unless it's 100%
