Best tire size?

so, I just got my first rotary truck, its a 74. im new to this whole thing, and I searched the fourms and i couldnt find exactly what i was looking for, my truck has 3 differnt sizes of tires and 4 differnt brands, im looking to get a new set, but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions, a rotary mechanic i took it to told me to get 225/50/15 but that seems a little big, and i think my wheels are 14's not 15's, So id like to know what you guys think? and im just going to be using it as a extra daily driver so i just need something that handles ok and steers easy, thanks

the stock wheels...

are 7.35-14-6 which is roughly the equivalent of 185/80-r14 tires according to my calculations. the overall outer diameter of the wheel is about 26". width wise, you can get as wide as you like, but that all depends on how wide your rims will support.

i run 205/50r16 in the front and 225/50r16 in the rear. i'm not lowered yet, but it looks like it wouldn't hurt to drop it an inch or so.

as for the "best" size, that really depends on your use and personal opinion. if the truck will be strictly a commuter, then i'd say as close to stock as possible would be the "best". i'm sure some of the others on this board have other opinions of what their best size recommendation is.

for the other question:
as far as widest tire, my rough measurements would indicate a 9 to 9-1/2" wide rim on the rear with a 265 tire. use this as a rough starting point. it all depends on how you want your wheel to sit. personally, i dont care much for the skateboard look. i prefer my wheels to sit flush and tight with the fenders.

the widest tire recommended with 7" wide rims is usually a 225.

SO i saw these wheels for sale and was wondering if they would they fit my repu with no problems thier 6 lug 16"x 8" with 0 offset and 6x5.5 lug pattern, the only issue i can see is that its a differnt offset then the originals, so i was wondering if that would effect anything?

a 16x8 (+0) will stick out about a 1-1/2" on the front and about a 1/2" in the rear. if you add the tire sidewall, add maybe another 1/4-1/2" depending on the size and profile of the tire you use. some of the b-series stock wheels are pretty popular. i've seen a few good looking isuzu wheels and i think chevy oems are almost perfect.

also, other concerns would be rubbing of the rim against any of the brake or suspension components if the offset is too shallow or deep. there are a couple of other threads that go into rims and offset in the forum here.

i have a PAIR of new Centerline 16x8s that will fit perfectly on the rear that i'm selling. i just haven't been able to find a good enough match for the front. unfortunately, centerline only makes them in one offset (+12) which will make them stick out on the front about an inch. some guys here dont mind that look, but it bugged me. i got them super cheap and will sell them for what i paid. i think $130 for BOTH, not each.

225/50 is the widest you can go up front. back has a lot more room. i have 245/50/15 in back.

i'm using a 15x7 up front with 3.75" backspace. the tires do stick out the fenders. it would be really easy for a 15x8 to rub up front if the backspace is not just right.

205/50/15 is popular up front, and my next tire will be 205/55/15 all the way around on a 15x7.

would a -15 offset be bad?

what backspace?

offset does not take wheel width into consideration, which varies by make/model.

backspace has wheel width built into it's specs so it's much easier to work with backspace. since it's the mounting surface location.

oh, and with a 16x8 it's gonna stick out and you'll have to run a real low profile tire, like 40 series max. so as to clear the fender lip. harsh ride.

REPU stock tire size

of course the factory tire size was a Bridgestone 7.35-14-6PRLT (page 52 of the owner's manual). Just sent an email to Bridgestone ... no phone number on their lame website so unable to ask them a quick question).

Closest tire I was able to find in a pinch was the Cooper Trendsetter SE P205/75 R14 M/S, max psi is 35.

Did several checks with 1 mile markers along the roadside when I drove from Seattle to Fort Lauderdale and the odometer was almost spot on.

I have some suspicions about the dynamic integrity of these tires though as they seem to vibrate slightly even though I have had them balanced twice, once doing the balancing myself.

tires

A few years I decided to take the stock tires off and put on Bridgestone P185/70R14 M/S. The local tire dealer said this was the closest to the stock tires.

15x7 standard offset, the front wheels need a standard offset so your wheel sits center to the spindle bearings and a 205 55 15 is a great tire if you want to lower the truck 2 in or not lower it . i have bfg traction ta tires and they look great and handle even better
