Power Steering

Has antone tried to install power steering to a 1976?

Nope

Not me, but I was considering it once when I thought I was getting a 1st gen PS box for free.

I was told it wouldn't work (some sort of mounting issues) but there must be SOMEthing out there that will fit. Most original steering boxes are due for replacement anyhow, might as well look at PS options.

You have anything specific in mind yet? Wonder what the street rod folks tend to use.

PS would be nice

But FYI reducing caster in the front alignment makes it noticably easier to turn the steering wheel. When I slammed my REPU, the compressed suspension naturally reduced caster (and increased positive camber :( ) and the truck was easier to steer..........

Martin-

The 1st gen RX-7 PS units won't work on the REPU because since the REPU is rear steer, and the RX-7s are front steer, the box would work backwards, even if you were able to fab a bracket to allow it to mount up, which would be difficult enough just based on the design of the unit (the side facing the rails is flat). Although, I am sure there's a way to make it work, but it's probably not worth the effort or time.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was told by someone else. Still, should be able to find a PS box out of SOMEthing that would work right? I wish I was anywhere near that stage in the process.

There's enough streetrod guys out there doing PS, it can't be impossible.

Got to be a heck of a lot easier than a rack.

...but not...

...nessecarily better. Give me functional bone-stock, or a nice rack (big grin) any day.

True, but I'm not looking to autoX my truck. SPeedy enough to taunt the uninitiated, but mostly I want it to look good and be functional. Bring home that new fridge from Home Depot or pull a bike trailer to the track on weekends. Did I mention look good while doing it? :)

You might have to ditch the helmet, Martin...

...if you're looking to be more of a magnet for the 'other' kind of a rack...

LOL. These days I practically have to wear it when I'm just walking around!

I've already crash-tested most of my gear at least once unfortnately, if I want to be around long enough to appreciate a good rack I got to keep my lid strapped on good and tight :)

I do a lot more riding than I do cruising it seems. WIth gas prices being the way they are I'll get my truck done just in time to have to pay $7.50/gallon :(

I hear ya on that one!

It's been over a year now of using my beater 323 for the daily driving, and even with the excellent mileage it gets, it takes more and more $$ to keep going...

One of these days, I'll simply be forced to convert *something* to homegrown ethanol! :)
