Ooop's...................

Boy did I screw up. I took a couple of sets of lower control arms, a pair of 77's and a pair of 74's to Les Schwab tire store to get the bushings pressed out. I was then going to refinish them and reinstall a new set of bushings before I reinstalled the arms.

After a couple of days with no call, I go back to check on them. They had one arm with the shaft partially removed. A few tool marks were on other-wise very clean, bead blasted arms. I reinforced that these were very important to me and fairly rare. They told me that they would finish one arm, but the others should be taken to a specialist or machine shop. I took the other three arms home, but mistakenly...I find now, I left the fourth arm to be finished.

Several days later without a call, I stop by. The guy working my parts, after a long search, could not locate my driver side control arm. He said he would search and ask the other crews. Today, I find they scrapped my vintage rotary pickup 1977 rust-free control arm. Gone, history, not to be found, tuna can city.

When I inquired as to how they were going to fix this issue, they said they would search for one and let me know.

So there you have it guys, Les Schwab, famous for service, lost a vintage rare part. Now what?

I plan to be patient a bit until I find their response, but I must admit, I am hopping mad.

Anyone have a 77 drivers control arm for a 77 available?

That really sucks

I would be pissed. How different is the 74 from the 77's? I have a 74 Courier I'm parting out if the lower arms are the same. I know that I used the upper and lower arms from my 84 on the 74 frame and everything bolted up OK. But I also used the 84 spindles and hubs. Let me know if you need the Courier part. I'll be glad to help a REPU brother out.

I just put a control arm on Ebay tonight, but I am not familiar with the trucks. I always worked on the Rotary Rx-7's. The arm is in the store below under REPU.

Thanks Guys, I appreciate the offers and info so far....

but, the 77 is a bit unique in that the lower control arm has a different pressing to hold a slightly different spring. In other words, they are not the same. That is not to say that you could not switch both sides and get it to work and/or match. That I have not tried. I do have a set of 74's, but they go to another truck that is next for rebuild. I would still need another 77 (or 77-81 per Craig's info). I prefer a matched later version.

John, I looked and found only an upper control arm shaft, not the control arm. If you have one, let me know.

As for Les Schwab (or better yet, "Let's Swap" or "Let's swipe"), I will find out next Thursday when I visit them after I get back from Wichita to see what they propose to do about this to fix my dilema.

I was thinking, maybe they might have screwed it up so bad, they decided to scrap it and declare it lost instead of admitting they F'd it up. After all, it was in a bit of a mess when I last saw it and I told them they better be a bit more careful because it was sort of banged up and half finished. Good thing I scooped up the other three at the time. Should have taken them all.

They were the last parts of both suspensions to finish before final assembly. Now I got a delay until this is resolved. Anyone here ever changed lower control arm bushings before? Who did it and how/where did they do it or get it done? It obviously wasn't at Les Schwab.....

On the lighter side, my brother-in-law, who is rebuilding my other 77 (family loaner program), when told of my control arm problem yesterday over a beer, thought about it for a second and responded with..."I guess I better lock up my shop till you get another part."

So sorry to hear!...

Schwab's has never (yet) done me wrong... but, then again, they're a tire sales/service shop...
I would not hesitate further, or wait one more minute before pursuing this matter with their management --on up through the corporate ladder until it's resolved, without delay. Take notes, record conversations if need be. Establish replacement rarity and value by getting the three top-dollar quotes locatable. (This is where Hunter comes in)?
Whatever it takes.

I'd call around the major shops... Hell, what about a 'whole' parts '77 ?

Best of success!
