stock rims for 77

Unless someone jumps in soon, it looks like I'll be getting a 77 REPU for Christmas and before it begins its long journey east to RI, I thought it might be good to make the most of the shipping charges. If someone in the Seattle area has some stock rims to throw in the back, it would take one item off my list.

BTW, thanks to all that contributed to the ebay thread, you really helped. How to send beers through the internet?

Also, what is the status of the valence repros, and how do I get on the list?

location

Hey Chris,

I'm in Providence and would also like to get together at some point. If the deal goes through, ETA is mid-late Jan. I expect I'll be needing some good advice on good repair shops, salvage yards and general care+feeding of REPUs in general.

Peace+Merry Christmas

Carson

Don't expect to need the Salvage yard too much....

with that one, but exhaust advice and maintenance,,sure.

What rims are you after? The stock steel wheels, beauty rings, and knock offs?

And as for the valance, just read the thread, its got the number, and call Rob at Pineapple, to place the order. I think many are waiting for the first review though.

rims

stock steel with rings, not fries. I prefer the look of skinny wheels/tires over the ones that currently on it.
My goal is to keep it as stock as possible as parts supplies permit.

You might want...

...to maintain the look more than the reality of stock narrowness after you take delivery and drive your REPU... in which case, a wheel speciality shop could widen a stock set for you, or build a set... you'll want a bit wider than stock rubber, even if you maintain a more-or-less stock appearance. Remember, there's some unusual offset to be taken advantage of in the case of the REPU's!
205/50/15's might be a good upgrade from the ultra-narrow 14's... but you'll want a 7 to 7.5" wide rim for those, as opposed to the stock 5.5"ers...
Rubber is the number one biggest bang-for-the-buck performance/driveability modernization available, assuming otherwise stock restoration... a complete RB header/exhaust setup a close second, IMHO...
Merry Christmas!

Rhody.....

I might be able to make you a deal if maybe your interested in swapping tires/wheels. I have a lot available, and even a couple of sets of stock steels I think..

I don't have any knock-offs available, but I have several versions of steels and lots of good tires.

I can get pics, and if your keen, I can swap em out and send it off with different rollers.

I personally liked the wheels on it, but I can't say I checked the rubber depth though.

If you want, I'll take pics of what I have and you can decide...

swap

I'd be interested in a swap. You've seen mine, show me yours. I have Jeep with 33x10.5s on 8" rims that handles much better than when it had 33x12.5 on 10" rims, hence my preference of tall/skinny. They also don't sling crap all over the sides of the truck.

stock 77

Lil Rhody, I got my 77 with the orig bias ply tires on it yet. They looked to crummy for driving around so I took the rims with the tires off and mothballed them. Went to the junkyard and got rims off a Nisson painted em and bought new tires. The orig tires are Bridgestone "Skyway Deluxe" 7.35-14 , 6 ply thread. The rim says 5 1/2-JJ147CO4. I went to our local Bridgestone dealer and told him I wanted to get the closest match to the old bias ply tires and he came up with P185/70R14. Not very high in the ply rating, but I only drive the truck around to warm it up or take it to the Midwest Rotary Rally in August, might put 200 miles a year on it. Jeff

I would've thought

you'd have to go with a 75 or 80 series tire to get near the stock overall outside diameter on the stock 14" rims... ?
BTW, IMHO, there's some major differences between a REPU and any 4x4, not to mention certain tire sizes/brands/compounds, let alone the range of potential wheel/tire diameter/width/sidewall% combinations...
Not to mention driving style!
Always nice to have a set of stockers, anyway... if only as backups!

tires

Klaus, you are correct, the tire center had a whitewall in the 75R14-Bridgestone. I didn't want that so I ended up with the 70R14 in a blackwall. That was the best I could get in a Bridgestone. Close enough for government work I guess. If I could have found Mazda rims at the junkyard I would of used them to, but the Nisson rims were in very good shape with undercoating even on the inside of the rims. In this state with the liberal use of salt in the winter, I compromised with the Nissons.
