Brakes

I have a 1976 Repu which I bought in Dec 2001. I am having problem getting the kit to repair the rear brakes books show they should have only one cylinder mine has 2 cylinders one at each end of the brake shoes. Does any one know if this was changed and from which other truck it could be? B1600, B1800, etc.?

Also, has anyone tried updating the brakes to bigger vented disc and maybe a five bolt pattern.

I love this little truck.

Well How aboutgetting a ford 9 inch rear end. or a mustang rear end. Those are five lug and have Disc brake kits readily availiable, But the price for those can be heartbreaking. Or if your budget allows maybe you could custom fit a rx7 independant suspension or a Jaguar independant rear end. Both of these would be cool but require custom work to make them fit. You get independant suspension as well as disc brakes. The jaguar rear end is even cooler because the brakes are right next to the differential instead on the hub by the wheel.

I wish budget would allow that. I guess I would have to just get the kit for repairing the brake cylinders.

If you will pull one off the bore size is on the whel cylinder and you can match a rebuild kit up that way. I did the same with the calipers also. I would stay away from the Jag rearends, from what I understand the rotors warp quikly and you have to dismantle the whole rig to get at them.

Brakes-rear

The Hollander book says the B1600 72-76, B1800 76-78, B2000 79-82 and B2200 82 have the same backing plate and drum. Then it mentions that the diameter of the wheel cylinder is not considered. I also checked out my Chilton truck book and in the rear brake section there is some exploded views of the different rear brake for the Mazda trucks and I see one of them does in fact have two wheel cylinders as you describe. They say its for 1977-78 trucks (don't say which model though). You might try the above trucks and see if they come up with anything. I had a experience with ordering a carb rebuild kit for the repu, and nobody could identify one, so on a hunch I asked for a RX-4 kit and sure enough they had it and the instruction sheet said for RX4 and Rotary pickups. Maybe you have the same situation where repu's are not in the computer but one of those piston trucks comes up with the right wheel cylinders. Good luck.
