It's a Cold Day In Hell, Guys....

A lot of external pressures and needing to finish my shop off made the decision for me.

Umm, yeah...

Definitely a case of don't HAVE to, don't want to, but it's the responsible thing to do. As of right now, I have 16 cars here. True, five of those are parts cars, a small handful are porjects waiting to be tended to, and there is the Ford truck and my DD. Awhile back I got an anonymous complaint filed against me because of the cars, and due to work still being a "work twice as hard for half the money" proposition (as it is for everyone right now), having very little free time to mess with the cars, and being beyond out of room to store the cars, I recently had a come to Jesus meeting with myself and realized I needed to do something- and it needed to be quick, painful and drastic. There was no other way to describe it. I made a decision that I had to reduce the number of cars here to a total of no more than eight for right now (including the DD, big truck, etc.). "Parts cars" needed to go. All of them, whether by dismantling to get what I want/need, or otherwise. I am also about to add on to my shop, more than doubling the square footage to the maximum footprint allowed by my township, which is still a relatively small 1600sq.ft. I decided the hobby was going to have to fund itself, so the nicer vehicles needed to go in order to pay for it, and so I could focus on the restoration projects I have had on hold for quite awhile- my RX-3 Wagon and my 1980 RX-7 IMSA clone. I also want to refurbish my 10th Anniversary. I no longer have the room to store the REPU indoors, and I don't want anything sitting and rotting outside, which is what would happen to any cars that hang around beyond the eight. Plus, my insurance I pay every quarter on seven cars is breaking me financially. I spend more on a year insuring these cars than most guys spent on their REPUs. So, by selling my Centurion Cruiser, the REPU (with the two parts trucks), my GSL-SE project (which will be on ebay soon), and maybe one or two others, I clean up, get the complaintant off my back, and can not only build my shop addition, but get the concrete floor, and then wire, insulate, drywall, heat and cool the entire deal and just be done. I am not out of REPUs for good by any means, just for right now. I plan on redoing an automatic down the road (I still have a ton of NOS and really clean used spares I am keeping).

The sad thing is that even if she sells for just the $8500, I don't think I would even break even on all the money I have in it (I sort of don't want to add up the receipts I do have).

Any chance you would sell an RX-2, or RX-3 from the collection instead of that beauty of a truck? I KNOW you will regret selling that truck. I have decided to keep mine for now as well, because my kids love it as much as I do,and my wife told me to keep it as well or I would regret it. I have been told by many to sell my RX-7 before the truck, but there is no way that will happen. The truck would go first even though I love it. Anyway good luck with the sale. I imagine it will not sell at that price though. Not that I think it isn't worth it,but just due to the economy. I hope it does though because it will raise the values of the other trucks out there. I know mine isn't as nice as yours, but it should have sold for the $4500 I was asking for it.

Can I fly out to MI,and help with the wiring of the shop in trade for a project car? I am licensed(not in MI),and work cheap;>)

Of course I'll regret it, I already do, and she's still mine right now! Where I am in life right now, what needs to be done to the shop, the basement, the landscaping, etc., and what funds I do and don't want to spend have a knack for making us make those hard decisions we don't enjoy. If the truck happens to not sell, don't get it wrong- I won't be disappointed she's staying here at home. But I won't be able to completely finish off my shop addition, start on finishing my basement, etc. and I still won't have solved alot of the "too many cars, not enough space" dilemma, either. If I were to disassemble all of the parts cars and trucks here right now to clear those chassis out of here it wouldn't help me out too much, since I don't have enough room to store the parts I already have loose. That's part of the reason I will give the two parts trucks I still have to the new owner- so they have some spares and I get a total of three chassis out of here. I put my truck at $8500 based on the two trucks that sold recently- the $7k+ one out West and the white one that sold for $9k last week. But you are right, it may not sell at my price, and if so, I'll keep it, and yes, be happier with that result down the road, but then I will be two years back on completing my shop addition. Right now I can only comfortably afford the addition itself- no concrete work, electrical, etc., so all I will effectively have added is storage space for now. If I do find my truck a new home, as upset as I will be about it, I have to look at the bigger picture- I will be effectively killing three birds with one stone (ease congestion car-wise, appease whomever dislikes me owning so many cars, and gain much needed usable shop floorspace that can be used year-round). Overall, it would be one step backwards, two steps forward. Heck, I'll probably try to buy her back in a few years after I can afford to add on to the garage too (planning on making that a four car in a few years- put two storage lifts in and it becomes a six car).

Either way things work out, there's good and bad sides to any result. The biggest issue right now is that I have to get all of my cars indoors that I possibly can, like it or not for many reasons.

I'd imagine you were kidding about doing my electrical, but if you were serious, heck yes- come on out and visit for a week or so (I have a spare room that hardly ever gets used)! After next week, I'm going to have to do something with several cars, irrespective of what happens with the REPU and SE.

I wasn't kidding about helping with the electrical. I am not licensed in MI,but that shouldn't stop me from doing the work, and you pulling the appropriate permits, and such. If I could help out,and get an old classic project car like an RX-4 or RX-2 then it would so be worth it to me. I bought this Datsun to replace the REPU,but I can't bear to part with it,and I am not really thrilled with the Datsun. I should have stuck to my guns, and got the RX-2/3/4 that I wanted (preferably a wagon),but I didn't,and now I regret it. I suppose most of my frustration with the Datsun comes from the fact I have owned it almost 6 months, and I have yet to drive it. I plan to get it going soon, and use it for the summer, and then attempt to sell it to get an old school RX car.

I will come out to help, and take care of your neighbors in the process;>)

Swine Flew?

(I thought that was after the first 100 days?)

Guess I've been out of certain loops too long... what white truck just brought $9K? Did Bruce sell?

...and that $7K one 'out west'...which one was that?

Not that I have that to spend; quite the opposite... but now I'm curious...

The $9k truck:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mazda-truck-rotary-truck-Mazda-Rotary-Truck-1974-1975-with-a-13B-motor_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a13Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a0Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem3ef47394e8QQitemZ270389187816QQptZUSQ5fCarsQ5fTrucks

The other one was right here on the board (all original, had the split seat, check the trucks for sale here a few listings down- flare yellow all original '74). Well, I'm assuming it went for $7k+, I know the asking price was $9k. Maybe it sold for less, but I doubt it went for half or anything silly like that.

I figured my truck was somewhere close to those (hopefully someone out there agrees), and I decided $8500 was the lowest I'd let it go for.

Dang!

9 Grand for that white truck... and it was obviously a repaint... and no underhood pic's... and no pic's of the "extremely clean" undercarriage... and those non-stock mirrors, oversize 18" (and sure to rub) wheels, non-period-correct tailgate lettering, steering wheel, yada yada...(!?!)

Good example of how to run a successful REPU auction, tho... or , perhaps, of what "style" sells, at least in Wisconsin, I guess. But, hey: Whatever works!

It did look to be a nice, clean example.

(...but who knows what lurks below the surface... especially with someone "selling it for their friend"...)

Gotta say, I like your truck lots better, Neal -- (plus, we know who you are, and that you're trustworthy and reliable!)

That white truck in WI is back up on Fleabay again. I guess it didn't really sell.

Fellow Auburn Fan

I live in Hunstville Alabama and I am an Auburn grad. I once owned a non running repu after I graduated. I had to sell due to financial situation. Regreted ever since. Started to consider buying again a few years ago but have not been able to find one.

I graduated in Architecture and currently own Arc Design Build inc. Have you designed your building you are contemplating building yet. I would be interested in trading my services for your truck. It might not be enough to cover the whole amount but it might help us both out.

I am going to Michigan in the fall for business and would be interested in working things out so I could drive truck home after my meeting.

Let me know if you are interested. War Eagle!

WAR EAGLE back at ya!

Unfortunately, Anders, my shop addition (part of it, anyways) is already up, and it isn't anything fancy at all- no design or engineering work was required. It's very modest (read: small) and simple, yet sevres my purposes. The shop is currently just 1,000 square feet and will eventually be expanded to the maximum permissible 1,600 square feet, but I really don't need any design assistance with it, but thanks for the offer.

Funny we've never met before- I was at Auburn from '94-'98 and am down visiting Huntsville, B'Ham, Leeds and Auburn usually once or twice a year, and thought I had heard of most of the old schoolers in the area. I had a friend who went through the architecture program the same time I was down there- maybe you met him- Dan MenMuir?

Chris,

You have to keep in mind that it sort of had to go for different reasons. I'm already planning the next truck.

She sold for $6500. I have the yellow RX-3 Wagon up now- for just a few hundred dollars more than the engine alone would cost. I think this is your next project..... got your name written all over it.
