Sneaky Rust

In the teardown of my bed ( http://themonkeyhouse.org/REPU/2004-02-18_Stripping_bed-topside/index.html )I've noticed two places where where the rust is particularly sneaky.

The first place is along the edges of the bed floor where there is apparently some sort of caulking substance. I took the air chisel to this stuff and wouldn't you know it, lots of cancer a'brewing right under this stuff.

The second is in the seams where the wheel well is joined to the underside of the bed floor. I initially thought I might get away with soaking the seams with ospho, letting it wick in and neutralise the rust inbetween the two pieces of metal, but the last thing I want after this much work is to have my paint bubble up in five years because I got lazy on the prep-work. So I'll be drilling out the spot welds/grinding off the tack welds and removing the wheel wells entirely from the bed. This will let me treat for rust the right way, plus give me more room to weld patches into the side of the bed as well. Probably another 8-10 hours of work, but necessary IMO.

Just thought I'd mention it in case any of you were hunting for rust, these are two places where its not obvious at first sight, but will eventually swell and split seams on you if it gets bad enough.

Also you'll notice that the front panel of the bed (opposite the tailgate) unbolts from the bed. For the cost of removing four bolts this also affords you better access to the corners where rust often starts due to moisture/dirst buildup. Might as well get it while its easy to get.

Hey rotormonkey,

I recently found your site, and I loved your background on your website!!!
If you want it, I can send you a much better one. One that isn't pasted together!! Or I can make something up for you.

Juan

Hey that would be great. I don't mess with the site much more than just to upload new galleries but I do want to redesign it and I really like your site design. WHen I get done w/body work I'm cleaning you out for all your REPU decals and vin plates and stuff :)

I'm going to clearcoat over them tho and its going to be very slick (I hope :).

You can email me at rotormunky@themonkeyhouse.org anytime, thanks!

I'm glad you like the site, and hope you don't mind that I put your link on it.

Thanks again.
