Stainless Battery Box
A thread for all to respond to who would be interested in a reproduction B-box done in stainless... Price to be determined, depending also on numbers, of course...
Let us know how bad you want how many! Then we'll see if we can get 'em made at a low enough price...
Sure would be nice...

I assume we are talking Full-Size Model....
with all the bells and whistles. Like hinged front door, sliding tray, hold-down clamps, etc?....
If so, I'll be in for a couple, depending on price, of course.
But I would have a suggestion, that we design it so it complements the original, so that those of us who only need one box, lets say, and two trays or doors, can retrofit a new tray or hinge door onto an old box.
What do you all think?

I was Trying!
To post a picture here of how a battery tray should look. But I can't seem to post pictures with my posts. I'm and idiot. Anyway if you go to the gallery and look at Charles restoration there is a picture of a battery tray pulled out with the battery on it. I hope to have some more pictures in the coming days. I have a battey box that could be used for a pattern but I am missing the sliding tray. Also the hinges are rusted out. Good luck with the project and hope the pics help everyone to understand.

Since I started this thread
after talking to Rob on the phone about the 'box, I'll likely be getting back to him with all these particulars when I go to pick up my repro. valances... (whenever that is.) Just FYI on the timetable of coming up with a price, etc. ...

I didnt know there was a slider in the box, I need to check and see if my box has one and I just never noticed. I bet not, but now I know what I need to look out for in the yards!

They tend to be missing,
or have become 'one' with the rust and corrosion in place... I certainly have never seen a fuctional example. Is there a drawer-type slider mechanism, or do they just sit in there?

They slide.....
on raised pressed indentations. There is a double screw/filler stud-like catch to keep it from tipping or coming out, but there is no bearings or rub strip to keep it smooth. It was sort of crude and simple,hence its rapid deterioration in most cases. I have a reletively decent box showing its design. I can get pics of its of value to anyone. I'm sure someone has a really nice one somewhere.

i restored my battery box. stripped it all down to bare metal. the battery drawer that slides out got covered in plasti-dip. a liquid plastic in a can i brushed over the drawer. did the same with the bottom of the box. so they're now smooth an slippery. then coated both with mobil 1 synthetic grease so it'll slide real nice and keep the rust monster away.

unless he lost it the slider will be in marks truck, the guy who originally owned the truck (who i got alot of mine from) was really nitpicky about things like that all of the trucks i got from him save one had perfect battery boxes even the parts trucks

He wanted me to find out what's important to you:
Exact reproduction?
Strength?
Sliding tray?
working clasp/hold down?

It needs to look nice.....
a sliding tray is a must, as well as front cover with locking clasp.
Exact reproduction is less important to me, but I would prefer an interchangeable sliding tray with the original so I can retrofit.
and of course.....moderate cost if at all possible.

Sounds like...
...we're all pretty much on the same page on these...: Biggest bang for the buck, preferably interchangeable piece-by-piece with the original, improved design where possible without deviating to much from the above criteria... am I right?
I'd be cool with a radically improved, different design as well... but I can certainly see the practical appeal of stock appearance/interchangeability. Rust-free at a weight savings would certainly be an improvement!
