Pinapple Racing Other Projects

I'm moving this to another thread, since we DID talk about a few things:

1) Slopp steering caused by a center link. He said you can weld a peice of metal to something up front, and it will make the steering resonable.

2) Diamond Plate bed liner. There is a possibility he can get a template made from the diamond place bed liner material he has in one of his REPUs. He didn't weld, or rivit it on, he used an industrial bond glue that auto repair shops use.

3) Rear End LSD. Possibility....

I'm going to call him up on Friday or Monday to chat more about the valance, and I'll see about the other stuff

That would be hte first thing I was interested in too.

THen the steering since I've got no ideas on this as of yet. Luckily my steering is pretty tight actually. For now anyway.

I'd LOVE to see a manual rack conversion.

THe bedliner I'll take a pass on. I hate diamond plate and have my own ideas for the bed anyway. If I manage a wood slat bed I'll try to make it easy to duplicate for anyone else interested.

I'd be game for a LSD too

There's GOT to be another mazda or ford or japanese truck that uses the same size ring gear and axel size and has LSD . . . .

Ford didn't have a truck of their own up to that point right? That's why they imported the Mazdas? That would rule out Ford.

Mazda trucks were 4X4 until the 80's right?

Even if we found a old model with LSD it would be older than dirt and probbaly slippy and worn out.

Honestly it looks easier to just swap the whole unit. There's plenty of rear-ends that should work for an outright swap.

Ford imported Mazda *mini trucks* but made their own mid to full size trucks. I'm also thinking Datsun and Nissan or a late model Mazda LSD would be a good pick. I love the 4.625 ring and pinion in my REPU and don't want to give it up. I wouldn't mind having a junkyard LSD rebuilt with fresh clutch discs and bearings anyways.

LSD, definitely most important!

Nice to hear Rob's getting into doing stuff REPU-specific; last time I asked, he was too busy to do a transmission... Now all I need is some more cash flow!
Having met a new local REPUhead with a nice clean '77, featuring a particularly nice spray-in bedliner job, I'd skip the other bed options as well. Never thought a spray-in would look and feel so good... this one was applied over the entire top edge, down to the tops of the hooks---but done very nicely!

posi diskbrake rear end

I picked up a 2001 chevy truck rear end out of spaldings in spokane wa, I know the purist will not like this idea, but aside from the axl shafts being shortend it is all serviceable late model parts, the chevy has 6lug pattern
and they came in a wide range of gear ratios. something to consider if you dont want 30 year old parts

Isuzu rear end. Six lug, LSD and disk brakes.

And you don't have to cut and weld axle shafts and housings.

Interested!

Any specifics? Year and model of truck, what ring and pinion gear and size, can I use the Isuzu pinion flange with REPU driveshaft flange, what size disc brakes and are they vented or solid disk, etc...

Not having done it myself (yet) so much of this is reasoned specualtion.

Isuzu has 55" and 58" rear ends (measured from wheel-mount faces). 90's troopers and/or Rodeos (and possibly Amigos) should carry one or both of these rear ends depending on years.

Our REPUs are ~52-53" from inside flange to flange, this much I'v measured. If anyone wants to measure from wheel-mount faces that would be helpful, otherwise I"ll try to yank the wheels off my truck and measure.

The glange on the driveshaft will likely need to be replaced but that shouldn't run you TOO much.

I'm some time away from worrying about this yet, but there was a repu with an Isuzu rear end on Ebay that was mentioned here in the forum I think.

Its definitely possible and even if you have to replace the drive shaft flange that's a LOT easier than dealing with narrowing the rear end.

Hopefully more light will be shed once one of us serisouly explores getting it done.
