Whoaa, lights out at the wrong time...

I was driving along a rural road early morning this week and as I flicked on the high beams it was lights out all together. Since the road was a winding road with no streetlights and the houses sit so far back from the road it was totally dark. Think of driving along at 45 mph or so and closing your eyes and then stopping without opening your eyes. That tightened up the britches I'll tell you. I limped the three miles home by emergency flashers.

Turns out my fusible link was really old and brittle and when I surged the line with high beams it blew out. Since they are no longer available (go figure eh?) I stole one from a parts truck and I was back in business quickly, but heads up guys, you might want to check them or replace them as they are all over 25 years old now and they are sort of a lifeline type issue.

I found the headlight link on my 77 is a .50mm and the main one is .85mm. I think that means 24 awg and 20 awg. in more modern terms. I made new ones with fusible link pigtails and 3/8" spade connectors. My 74 and 75's have regular glass fuses for these. I haven't checked the 76 yet.

Just a warning guys....

Similar situation

to one I experienced about 5 or 6 years ago... only I was on the freeway at the time. Fortunately, not much traffic, and my eyes adjusted PDQ! Always good to have spare fuses on board...
