Wheel questions

Looks like the bodywork is in full swing now, tailgate is being sandblasted as well. Eventually, though, I'm going to have do something about wheels. Mine are the originals on my '74, and covered in rust. I was thinking about having these cleaned and chromed, or, maybe some sort of new ones.
What have you guys done? Also, am I correct that the lug nuts come off clockwise, or did I misread that?

I believe the threads are only left handed on the left side of the truck(drivers side). That is atleast what I experienced when I broke one of mine while trying to loosen it like a normal bolt.Boy was I surprised when I figured this out.

Interesting. I was just looking at the original 74 pickup manual in the glovebox. It says to turn the lugnuts counterclockwise..I really want to be sure before I start jumping up and down on the lugwrench the wrong way.

I don't remember because it was many years ago,but I stripped one of my lugs because it was left handed, and I didn't realize it.I swapped out the lug studs for the proper right handed versions though, and it has been fine.I think I remember there being a "L" stamped into the lug nut or stud of the lefty ones which I didn't even think to look at until I stripped one.

I could have sworn on mine, the Passenger Front and the Driver Rear were reverse thread, and the other two were normal... ??!?!?!?!?!

Unless someone's already changed 'em out...

...the passenger side were/are 'normal' threads, and the driver's side 'reverse'... just like on 1960's Dodge trucks.

You should be able to figure out what's what, regardless, without snapping 'em off, if you proceed cautiously with a manual lug wrench...

Thanks Klaus,I guess I am not losing my mind.I also could swear that there is a "L" stamped somewhere on either the lug,or the stud that designated such.

Threads

Chris,

If your truck is a '76/'77 the threads are all typical right-handed. Earlier trucks, which are more numerous / more common used left-hand threads on the left (driver's) side. Of course on these old trucks it is always possible that someone has changed out lug bolts.. expecially on the left side after they broke a couple trying to loosen a left-hand thread by turning it counterclockwise! hehe

Good luck and happy rotoring.

Rob

If you need new front wheel studs

Ones from Honda CR-V / Honda Pilot work just fine. And the splines are like three hundredth's larger than stock which makes them a tight fit, and if the holes on the hub they slide thru are well used, the slight oversize will fill the gap. No more wiggly wheel studs.

+ the threaded stud is about 1/4" longer than stock. So you get more threads for the lug to tighten down on.

I use standard acorn lug nuts from america's tire co. with 19mm hex. Did not bottom out or run out of thread.

I did the drivers front on my REPU. Works bitchin`. Autocrossed on it once too. Everything is fine.
