hood bumpers

Anyone know a good replacement for the hood bumpers? one of mine is badly dry rotted, and the other is missing. A previous owner replaced it with a wad of masking tape.

Masking Tape? Duct tape works better longer!

...every single one of these I've ever seen on a REPU is worn out at best... but I have seen nice ones on other old rx models. Seem to recall an rx2 in a junkyard some time ago still had perfect (tho hard) ones... if we had the part #, I wonder are these still available? Seems like a lot of these little rubber parts (LRP's) were used on a number of models... like those rubber exhaust system hangars--I could use a nice supply of those!

Mine are still there, but one is about ready to fall off because it's been cut all the way through because the screw is not aligned too well with the dimple on the hood and the screw edge is cutting into it a little. I need to do something about this soon.

Screw the tape. Here is what I might do, and so should you.

Try rubber caps (3/4" or 3/8" used on unused heater hose/core fittings) from the 'Help' section of your local Shuck's/Checker/Kragen. I think they're what the previous owner used on his '77 REPU before my friend got it. They cover the whole thing, from the head of the screw all the way down past the locknut (give or take a mm or two). I think I have one somewhere around here... I'll have to try it out and see if it's going to work tomorrow or whenever I can get out there (nice weather around here... not).

Good Call!

...I was (sorta) kidding about using duct tape...

Cool.

It was an ok day today weather-wise (no snow, heh) and I tried my rubber cap and it worked beautifully! This is one of those 'must-do' mods (kinda like when I hooked my ignition up in such a way that, well, it sounds like a throaty 2nd gen).

I got a pack of the rubber caps today so I can replace both my hood bumpers and still have one left over for its original purpose. Here is what to look for at the store: (Shuck's etc)

In the radiator cap/thermostat isle (or maybe the HELP! section if your local store isn't set up like mine is), look for the little red paper things with the clear plastic 'blister pack' (or whatever it's called) holding two rubber caps called BYPASS CAPS. Just look for the big bold HELP! printed near the top of the paper backing and you'll find 'em. Or just ask an employee where the 5/8" bypass caps are (mention they're probably in the thermostat isle if you get a newbie). The part number is 02252 and is located at the upper left corner above the hanger hole. The price I paid was $1.99, and worth every cent, unless used to try to hold back pressure or vacuum in a hot location (crappy rubber which easily cracked on me, but should be more than enough for the hood height adjusting screws). They look good too. Get some!

thanks jeff20b,

i took your advice. Only when i went, i couldn't remember what size to get. i got 3/4 inch. It fits all the way down over the bolts, but wasn't tight. I'm sure they would've stayed on as i don't normally drive with the hood up (happened once in a rx7...not fun) but i wanted to make sure. i secured them with some "Goop" brand adhesive and they look and work great. Makes me want to clean the whole engine bay.

My, what a nice new black antenna you have!... Did you give it that finish, or purchase it that way? Too cool...!

Cool! I'm glad it worked for you! The 5/8" fits perfectly, but I'm sure yours will stay on with the sealer, even if you do accidently leave the hood up.

Just an afterthought, since the rubber goes all the way down, water may get trapped under them and cause some rust. I might drill a hole through it for breathability, or cut a notch in the bottom.

i bought it that way i think it cost around $10. I think that was one of the first things i bought for my REPU. I just could not stand the super cheap flexible replacement antenna that a previous owner had installed. It looked horrible on the front fender and it was bending to the side also.

I don't think i'll have that problem. The inside of the cap is totally filled with adhesive. I had to wipe the excess away.
