Hey Jeff20B.....

You posted this pic of rotor housing the other day. My Repu has markings like the one on the left.

What housings are they?

I'm almost positive that my Repu does not have the original engine in it.

Thanks, Scott.

They are JDM rotor housings. You most likely have an R5 13B like some of us. They're really cool 4 port engines. :)

That's cool...

But the bad news is that this truck smokes badly at startup, and was driven that way for a year. If it was driven daily, then the smoke was minimal. Once warmed up it hardly smoked at all.

I assume the housings are toast.

Sounds like the housings are hard to come by and/or expensive?

Rotor oil o-rings

Try some Valvoline high mileage oil and a bottle of STP NO SMOKE. That's worked good on a JUNKyard motor I had. MUCH less smoke.

Well, I got the truck transported into my new shop. It's been in storage for a couple of years. I'll get the motor pulled and will get it apart....then I guess we'll see what kind of $$ it'll take to get it back on the road. I'm not going to continue driving it with it smoking like it does.

I'll let you know what I find when I get it apart. I've built many engines in the past, but no rotaries yet. I'm sure I'll need lots of advice....

Watch out for the big cam with only two lobes, and the sloppy timing chain. :)

I've seen those cams.... got big lobes but not much lift. I don't get the "sloppy timing chain" comment... but I'm sure I'll find out soon.

I've got an original Mazda shop manual, but is there any other or better books, videos, etc that would be a good reference to get my hands on?

Put a battery in it and fired her up yesterday. I wanted to make sure everything was in good running order before I tore it down. It's been about a year since it was last run. It fired right up, no leaks, no funny noises...basically sounded great.... just a bunch of smoke.

Looking forward to working on the teardown this weekend. I also looked over the factory workshop manual, and it looks to be a really decent reference. I hope those R5 housings are salvageable. We'll soon find out!
