Transmission Swap

From my understanding, the shifter hole in the cab needs to be notched to accommodate a 5-speed transmission from a RX7.

Can someone show me how much they had to notch or cut out?

My truck is at the body shop and I'd like them to do the cut before they lay paint.

Please HELP!

Don't cut it. Any first gen rx7 tranny with fit without modifying the tunnel opening. If you go with a 2nd rx7 turbo tranny, the tranny can be modified to fit the stock repu shifter location.

The SA 79-80 trans has the shifter in the same location as REPU so that trans is plug and play. But the 81-85 have the remote shifter that's like 5" rearward and you have to cut the tunnel or use an SA tailhousing & shift rods.

Either way u need to fab the adapter plate to bolt up to the bottom of the trans.

Some specs are here:
http://mazdarepu.com/board/viewthread.php3?FID=2&TID=2057

The SA RX7 79-80 5 speed trans mount studs are located further rearward so you make a plate to bolt to the studs on one end, and the stock holes in the crossmember. The shifter is in the same spot as REPU so you don't need to cut the trans tunnel.

I think the old school ribcase 5 speed needed the adapter plate too. And the shifter is in stock REPU. You can almost never find these transmissions anymore and they're usually hosed when you do.

FB RX7 81-85 5 speed has the shifter much further rearward and you either cut the trans tunnel or use the tailhousing, shift rods, and fabrication from SA.

S4/S5 2nd gen trannies are another animal and I'll let someone else chime in.

I found this drawing on my harddrive. Not mine, haven't checked the numbers but looks about right. Enough to get you going.

Ok, I' try to remember how i did this....
Found a shifter mount from '83 rx-7. It bolts onto the tail housing of the tranny. Has 4 bolts.
Cut off front section of shifter bracket. Going from 4 bolt to 2 bolt connection on tailpiece to shorten shifter mount location 5-1/4" forward.
Removed tail housing from T-2 tranny.
Shorten shifter rod to forks 5-1/4".
Had to use the guts from shifter socket in '83 rx-7.
Machine hole to position shifter socket on modified rod.
Reassemble and install transmission.
I was able to use stock REPU tranny mount cross member.
Drilled a couple extra holes and shimmed up for proper angle on drive shaft.
I have some photos but have never figured out how to post them.
Send me you email address and i'll forwrd to you.

I have the original drawing out in my garage. Worked perfect on my 74, had to pry the engine a bit on my 76. Tired motor mounts I suspect. It should work for you. Another pic is in the forum files.
