Rear wheel bearing replacement

There is a threaded nut that holds the rear wheel bearings on. FSM says to use a MAZDA spanner tool part # 49 0603 621A to unthread it but I can't find that tool for sale anywhere.

What have you used unthread the rear wheel bearing nut? A brass drift and hammer would do it but I prefer not to go that route if possible.

Anyone ever make a tool out of flat steel bar and some bolts grinded to proper shape?

Hey Brad,
The nuts are just a retainer nut. The bearings are pressed on the axle so a shop would have to remove and replace them.

I completed the task. Each axle took two hours not including taking it to a shop to have the bearing pressed on for $15 each. I tried holding the axle in a vise but it just rotated while trying to loosen the nut. So I forked out the dough for the factory axle holder, and the factory tool to remove the nut. Also bought a heavy duty puller to remove the bearing (not pictured). Lots of cleaning before oiling the bearing, blue loctite gel on the threads then crank the nut on.

New Timken Bearing pressed on and oiled. I'd use grease next time instead as the oil drips out when installing into the axle tube.

Hi Bruce. The axle holder and wrench were $208 shipped. Bought them from Mazda's SST division which is part of Snap-On.

Not including the heavy duty puller for $85 to get the bearing holder and bearing off...

I already had the 3/4" breaker bar and 5' pipe for the wrench.

Thanks for posting the pics. Never had to do the job thank goodness.

Think I will try and round up the following:

U Joint press: 49 0259 460A

Coil spring holders: 49 0223 641 and 640A

Spanner for axle shaft lock nut: 49 0603 622A

Companion flange holding tool: 49 0259 710A

The fixture that holds the axle (you provided a pic) is not shown in the manual, not even mentioned ... unless it is the
Attachment for rear axle stand: 49 0164 562 B

Brad, as I am sure you already know the lame factory repair manual does not show the tool or job that you just performed. Of course it also leaves out the most difficult job ... the front A arm bushing replacement.
