Back Firing...

I have an 75 project REPU that has the original 13B engine and 4 spd in it. It starts right up and runs really smooth but backfires sometimes when shifting or after I turn the truck off. I do not know very much about rotary engines and am in need of some help to solve the problem. Could it be the timing? I would think if it was timing it wouldn't start/run very well so im at a loss.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

your carbuerator may need a rebuild they plug up over the years with varnish.and wont operate properly.

backfire will mainly be from excess fuel sitting in the exhaust.

do u have the stock carb?
heres some diagrams.

Other items to check:

Are you still running a points distributor? There were different versions of these as well...unsure whether or not on the REPU, as opposed to rx-4, etc. -- but there was a version featuring a third set of points, etc., intended as part of an anti-backfire arrangement...

What about the possibility of carbon build-up in the combustion zone/on your rotors? That might have something to do with 'run-on'... The best way I know of to decarbonize is to treat with a can of AmsOil Power Foam.

Thank you all for your responses! I am indeed still running the original points distributor. Nothing has been rebuilt ever to my knowledge so I have a place to start. I will try some of that "seafoam" and go from there. Thanks again

Backfiring is common if you are still running the original smog equipment and thermal reactor. The backfires will be numerous when the thermal reactor is cold and less so when it warms up to operating temp. The thermal reactor is an early version of a catalytic converter but uses heat to burn off the pollutants. Most all early rotaries (1971-1979) are subject to backfiring to some degree and have to be in perfect tune for them not to.
