light vibration problem
guys, i need your expertise...
i've noticed a light vibration in the gear shifter when driving my repu at highway speeds. i notice it more when my foot is on the gas and i'm at cruising speed. when i take my foot of the gas, it is noticeably less.
my first thoughts were u-joints in the driveshaft, the driveshaft needs rebalancing, or the driveshaft center bearing starting to go.
but i thought i'd check w/ the experts here before replacing parts needlessly.
thanks!

Sounds like you are on the right track. Don't forget to check the balance on your tires, specially the back ones. I would start with the cheepest and work your way up.

Don't overlook ignition misfire. Might be why you are experience vibration during cruising and acceleration???

thanks for the input.
the tires are relatively new, so the wheels were balanced not too long ago. unless my ridiculously cheap kumhos are already flat spotted!

check that the driveshaft center bearing is bolted tight and the rear driveshaft flange is bolted tight to pinion flange.
also torque the leaf spring shackles and u-bolts.
could be a rear wheel bearing letting go.

Transmission input shaft bearing...(?)
...or countershaft bearing (?)

checked the u-joints, driveshaft bearing, pinion bearing to the diff, and inspected all the hardware underneath. everything is tightened enough, so my next step is to check the input shaft bearing at the tranny and the wheel bearings.
now, i dont notice any vibration in the shifter with my foot off the gas, just when i have it at 1/4 throttle (cruise) or under acceleration.
thanks for all the input. i'll keep you guys posted when i get a chance to check out the next bunch of parts.

You can use a timing light to check for ignition miss. Had a friend with same issue. Upgrade to DLDFIS for ignition.

interesting...
if it was the ignition missing, i would find it odd that it would only manifest itself when i'm off the throttle. i dont get any backfiring or shaking in the truck itself, so the vibration isnt that violent. its just a buzzing type vibration that seems abnormal to me. like something is out of balance... but i'll check the timing this weekend to rule that out too. thanks for the advice.

So have you ever figured out what the problem was.

not yet!
i still haven't had a chance to check ignition timing or spark yet, but i'm thinking it could be a very good possibility now. i was checking the nuts and bolts on the carb, intake manifold, and exhaust manifold because i thought i heard a leak of some sort coming from under the hood and found a bunch of them on the somewhat loose side. so i retorqued them and that seemed to improve the engine smoothness and leaking noise. go figure! in turn, it seemed to reduce the vibration in the shifter a little too, or i'm just getting used to it.
i'm at a point now where i want to replace the center link though. so i might be getting ready to send a moog unit to the place that Brad had his put together at.
i will also replace the tie rod ends and inspect items like bearings and the rest of the suspension that may need replacement.

replaced centerlink, outer tie rod ends, and lower ball joints, checked front and rear bearings, driveshaft center bearing... and an alignment. drives and handles noticeably better. also found that the exhaust was not hung properly and the hangers were unusually stiff thus transmitting a lot of exhaust vibration. could be the source of some of my vibration problems. after correcting this, all i need is a paint job and my repu will be practically new!
also, took out spark plugs, cleaned and reinstalled. inspected cap and rotor and checked timing. all is good in ignition-land, so missing is not the culprit. will attempt to tune carb at some point.

Vacuum leak(s).
...that's my best guess at this point.

that's what i thought too. i checked what few hoses are still in the engine compartment and that did not seem to change anything. i may soon replace them all just for my peace of mind anyway.

Hi
sorry, just today I read your post. Have you checked the fan blade and the Water pump? sometimes its a matter of disbalance of any of them.
Hope everything runs fine

thanks for the suggestion. the fan blade and water pump both look like they spin ok and are balanced ok.
i am going to look into the ignition problem a little more, but it has gotten cold, so my motivation has gone down w/ the temps.
