I think I broke my clutch
So with the new motor in my REPU it should be putting down about 200 HP at the wheels. Well I was hitting the highway on-ramp showing it off to my friend at 8000rpm and banging through the gears 1 - 2 - 3 - grind - grind and then I coast down to about 5 mph down the next exit ramp and manage to get it in to 1st gear. I drive about 2 miles home at 25mph in first gear which is really loud in my truck!
So now the clutch feels fine when pushing the pedal but it doesnt dis-engage. Time to drop the tranny! I never dropped the REPU transmission before so hopefully that isn't too crappy of a job. Any guesses on what I will find in a couple weeks?

I think you broke your tranny. I had a similiar occurrence. Shifting hard into 3rd and something let go. All gears except 4th, gearing is 1:1 ratio, ground very loud. Removed tranny and found front bearing for shaft under input shaft wasted. Ball bearings falling out. Funny thing is I always thought the tranny had alot of gear noise which I suspected was the throughout bearing. Anyhow....great way to justify upgrading to T-2 tranny.

"Broke"
You could have pushed the throwout bearing right through the clutch "fingers" too, leaving the transmission undamaged, but once it's out a five speed would be nice wouldn't it.

sounds like clutch to me, if it wouldn't engage gears without grinding, and clutch won't release. Maybe broken finger(s) in pressure plate so it cant lift it clear of clutch. Normal pedal feel would indicate that...
Now, finding the right parts.....
Good luck!

clutch disc
So now the clutch feels fine when pushing the pedal but it doesnt dis-engage.
This happened on my ah-hem Comet, and a piece of clutch disc material was wedged in between the pressure plate not allowing it to disengage. My buddy had his REPU disc rebuilt in Las Vegas, if you need the place I'll contact my friend.

If its the clutch disk or pressure plate the good news is that I have just been using the S5 NA rx7 parts so it will be easy to come by. If its the tranny then indeed a 5-speed would be nice. I may get it pulled tonight, otherwise this weekend I will find whats wrong.

Drain your trans. ...
....before you pull/drop anything, and see how much metal comes out, (or not!) -- that should tell you plenty about the health of your trans.

Good thinking, I was going to drain it any way to keep from dumping gear oil in the driveway but now I will collect it in a container I can actually see in.
I replaced the fluid a couple years ago, hopefully it still looks clean and nothing is destroyed.

I have just been using the S5 NA rx7 parts so it will be easy to come by.
That is a relief for me. I have a clutch disc I wasn't sure would fit and I have been babying my clutch. At least I know now I can get one when I need one.
Good luck with the trans. oil inspection.
Does your drain plug have a magnet?

Trans oil looked ok, only a very small amount of very fine metal stuck to the magnetic plug. I hope this means the trans internals will be no problem. I unbolted the drive shaft and the rear is stuck to the diff, I gave up as it was getting pretty warm out making me a little light headed. Tomorrow will try and get an early start to get the tranny dropped the rest of the way. I did get a new clutch just in case, so if all goes well I can get the whole thing put back together in one big push!

Might need to verify the compatibility of the flywheel. I have an S5 flywheel on mine so there is a possibility the RX7 parts wont work on the REPU flywheel. I wish I had a REPU flywheel to compare to and let you know for certain.

I remember removing my tranny one time.... I was able to get enough bend on the drive shaft by removing the bolts for the center bearing and pulling it down and sideways. I didn't even remove flange connection to rear end. Also,, Mazdatrix has some good info and photos for flywheel identifying. Good luck.

Tom, I recently had the same problem with the stuck diff/driveshaft deal. I was actually asking on the forum to see if there was a bolt somewhere I was overlooking.
You just gotta keep whacking at it, it'll come offa there. I was about ready to torch it before mine started to move.

Rotary Clutches
I never had any luck with OEM clutches, especially on bridgeported or streetported engines. I got all my clutches from Racing Beat or MazdaTrix. And I never had a problem with any of them. I was keenly tuned in to getting an ankle full of clutch...and I regularly turned 10,000+ RPM.

Ouch
So new clutch, new pilot bearing, and new pilot bearing retainer spring/clip are needed. I have a new Mazdacomp clutch, will give that one a shot. Need to see if I can manage to get a bearing and spring as well. I hope that spring is not NLA.

How's your flywheel?
As big of a PITA as it might be... now would be THE time to insure that it's absolutely 100%...

Flywheel should be ok, was resurfaced about 1000 miles ago when I put the motor together. I do need to verify. The clutch looks to have worn quite alot in the short time I had it, never felt it slip though. Going to look into pressure plates I think.
Mazda shows 2 throwout bearing retainer clips in the US, so I ordered both. Hopefully at least one of them really exists.

I think you're right to verify each and every part of the assembly, given the ultra short lifespan you just experienced.
No substitute for 100% proper!

Clutch Repair
Hello TimPA136,
"My buddy had his REPU disc rebuilt in Las Vegas, if you need the place I'll contact my friend." Could you post the addy for the Las Vegas vendor for all of us please. I have a REPU clutch I would like to have rebuilt if this can be done. The big, heavy REPU flywheel provides lots of low end,low rpm assistance, allowing you to just idle along through some rough fields, but it does slow down the engine acceleration and makes quick shifting more difficult, especially if you have a poor pilot bearing. Do you know if they only do the clutch disc or do they do the disc and cover as well. Thanks
