Knocking at 5k

My truck just starting crapping out about 4.5 to 5k. runs fine other than that. Almost sounds like something tapping on the hood right in front of me. Any ideas what the hell is going on?

Are you saying it idles fine, or is the knock still there?
What exactly do you mean by 'crapping out', does it bog/die/ need more info.
Any sort of 'knock' from a rotary is bad news..usually a bearing if it knocks continuously. Hopefully just a mount or something bumping.

Put a lighter spring in the secondaries got those working. Idles fine runs great up to higher rpm, sounds like something loose banging around but it does "bogg out". Ran great today this just started this afternoon. I was looking for anything loose or suspect but it got dark on me.

could be backfiring thru the carb into the air filter.

sounds like lean misfire. not enough fuel pump or clogged fuel filters.

What are the odds...

...that if it's a clog, that it's in the fuel pick-up in the tank? I'd want to confirm clean, clear lines all the way back, as well as pump output -- and superb cleanliness throughout the carb. I would also suspect that changing out that spring addressed the symptom, but not the cause...

I believe y'all are right. haven't had chance to work on her today but will tomorrow!! Y'all have any suggestions on refinishing the gas tank? It had alot of trash in it and I have it pulled out just need to get it cleaned up. I am using a fuel cell for dirt track car now that i know is clean.

Whatever you do...

...*don't* use that 'Kreem' stuff!

Only thing worse than an old rusty tank, is one with tank liner coming off...

A friend of mine recommended something like the following:

Drain. Add something like BB's or small ball bearings and solvent, plug openings, and agitate to knock loose rust and scale. Drain. Repeat as needed. When no more detritus comes out, rinse with something like Castrol superclean solution. Repeat with soap/hot water. Rinse with hot water until it runs clear and clean. Remove remaining moisture with SLX alcohol. (Not rubbing alcohol!)
Treat with dilute phosphoric acid solution to convert remaining rust, and allow to dry. Repeat as needed. Rinse with water, followed by alcohol, if you feel the need. Call it good...

A used bass guitar string might be helpful in reaming out the fuel pickup tube...

Then there's the stuff marketed by the POR-15 folks; unknown how good it is, (or not?)

Hopefully not; but it COULD be that you have too much timing dialed in. When you get more revs and the mechanical advance curve comes up you might be getting detonation.... NOT good! LOL

That could be...

...but, we also know from another thread he's got unrelieved pressure in the crankcase, too...

Right.....I belive it was backfiring thru the carb cause thats exactly what it sounded like as Brad said. Like pop pop pop.
Fixin to clean up after my oil fiasco and go for a drive.

It's a safe bet...

...that your backfire/fuel issues are also related to your crankcase pressure issues. I would try to insure all is well, and corrected, prior to firing up again.

Took her for a nice drive and washed the oil off.......seems to run an awful lot smoother without the ventilation issues
