Exhaust Suuggestions?

I have the racing beat road race header and need to get an exhaust setup so I can get back rolling. You guys have any suggestions that a local muffler shop can handle? I think i remember reading a thread two or three years ago(last time I had the repu out)about running two turbo mufflers or something like that. The bolt on after market exhaust setups I have seen are only for RX7's.

for dual outlet header: 2 racing beat presilencers, merge before axle, one BORLA stainless steel muffler on the end.

Very few...

...non-rotary-specific mufflers will stand up to the 'pulse' for very long.

Also, more wall thickness throughout = better tone, and durability, in general.

The RB presilencers are pretty good at cleaning up the 'tinny' character.

Beware anything glass-packed -- it won't last!

Thanks guys, glad to see you two are still around!!! I haven't had the time or money to play with my repu in a couple of years. I couldn't even remember my password for the forum. I have a makeshift setup to get me to the muffler shop with two 3' straight pipes with a turbo muffler on the end, and as I remember it was mighty loud. I have not even started the truck in about a year so I am really exited about getting her back on the road!!!!!

Brad, two questions you recommend the 3" universal presilencer from racing beat? and where is the best place to purchase that muffler.

Thanks

sweet

what are you doing for a collector? magnaflow makes a good one. also used a flowmaster collector in the past. good angle of convergence on the flowmaster - 30* or so. the magnaflow is more like 45*.

the dual 2" inlet to single 2" outlet that they've been making for decades?

kinda small outlet and the design is over simplified. you don't want the dual pipes pointing towards each other and the cross area of convergence is very limiting.

I thought so too but I did not not know I had another option beside building one. bought some tubing as well to play with that. I am looking into your suggestions now.

Thanks!!

I had the same header on my Repu. I had a Y-Pipe installed and ran 2 1/2" Pipe with two Glasspacks and a Flowmaster. If the funds were available to me I would have run Dual Exhaust, HP and throttle response would have been significantly improved but what I had performed very well.

If you want to save some $ and some weight, you can make your own "Presilencer..." I pulled a RB presilencer apart 10 or 12 years ago when I switched from a collected to an uncollected system on my S5 GTUs... So what's all the hype about the RB presilencer? A perforated mild steel tube packed with stainless steel wool... ie: a modified glass pack. As far as I can tell, the "stailess packing" is the same stuff you use to scrub dishes.

Now all the racingbeat stuff is 1/8" wall mild steel tube. They do this to make it cheap, stand up to the heat and supposedly to make the car a little quieter. If you build your own, you can use stainless instead. It'll hold up to the heat better, not rust and be a hell of a lot lighter. FWIW, I've used both thick walled mild steel and stainless on rotary exhausts, and the difference in noise between the 2 was not really noticable.

I was in school at the time I built that first exhaust, so I did it on the cheap. But since then I've used nothing but stainless, for the reasons mentioned above. The difference is cost is very small. Here's what I bought for that first exhaust:

2 glasspacks $50
2"od mild tube: $40
Assorted Mandrel Bends$75
Flanges $25
Cheap welder from
Wall Mart $200
Stainless Steel Wool
from the grocery store$20

I already had the RB mufflers and header. If you have access to a welder, that's the biggest cost. For the glasspacks, I just cut em open, and pulled out the fiberglass and packed 'em with the stainless. If you're careful, the stainless wool is manufactured in a coil. Just find the center ans slip it onto the perforated tube. Couldn't be any easier. Still have that exhaust on the car 12 years later, too.

For stainless, you can get stainless glasspacks on ebay... Item: 110235948985, tubing too... The dual exhaust for the FC from racingbeat is like $1400 + shiping and it's heavier, will rust...
Just my $.02...

Your $200 welder will weld stainless? What wire do you use? I need to build an exhaust and was under the impression I could only do mild steel but if I can do stainless thats sweet!

Well, yes and no... My first system was mild steel and I used that welder. Used a standard mig with straight argon for the stainless later on. However, I believe they do make stainless flux core welding wire. It's generally only used outside, as using a gas welder outdoors on a windy day blows away the sheilding gas and yeilds defective welds. It's pricey, I think like $100 bucks for a 5 pound spool, but it would work in that welder.

Also, I went into that project knowing how to weld already. If you do not, you might want to take another look. That being said, if you get a book or video on welding, and you're a fairly methodical and mechanically inclined person, and you practice for a while on some scrap, there's no reason you could not learn well enough to weld up an exhaust. It's not like you're welding on the space shuttle or anything. Just make shure you're laying down nice beads before you start or you'll end up sucking on exhaust fumes ;-)

I do a little stick/arc welding. When welding stainless if I don't have stainless rod I'll use E-6010 rod which is used for mild steel. I don't see why mild steel wire wouldn't work...espeacially with argon or nitrogen gas shield.

Sparky, can you weld me up an aluminum rear bumper? Do you weld aluminum?
