Oil Metering pump cable routing?

Hi.
When I bought my truck last fall, I noticed the Oil Metering Pump was poorly tied to the throttle linkage.
I'm amazed it works at all, to look at it you'd think there was no possible way it could work.
FWIW I run a Holley 650.

How do you guys route your cables?
(Racing Beat is sending some info via snail mail)

Mine are

..pretty much the stock linkage. (Would that be of any help with your situation?)

Klaus - Do you have pictures? Because my Haynes Manual somehow fails to mention the linkage at all.

Sorry it's taken me this long...

..to get back to you.

After some pondering, realized that (hard-to-see) pics of the stock actuating rod would likely do you no good -- since you've got the Holley, it (or the Holley-specific replacement?) will need to hook up to it in whatever manner it requires... I would go with the 'proper' RB recommendations in this regard. The quick question for RB might be, "Does the Holley use the stock actuating rod?"

Easily visible details of the stock metering oil pump/hoses/linkage are on page 27 of the Mazda Rotary Pickup Parts Catalog, aka section 14, "Oil Pump". I could probably email you a scan of that page, if you actually need it.

Should you be in need of the stock actuating rod, it's Mazda Part# 1757 14 651 'Rod, connecting'. Of course, then there's the little washers and clips/pins...

Hope this helps!

(Cables? What cables???)

the omp cable

I saw pictures on a different forum. Somebody had strewn a cable from the throttle side of the carb, across the top of the float bowl, and down to the OMP. A real hack job.

There is a Racing Beat Holley metering pump rod that is designed to work with their modded Holleys; they add a lever arm to the throttle shaft. The rod clips to the arm. It's a little longer than the stock 1757 one.

You have a couple of choices. you could either:

A. leave it as is. (I wouldn't.)
B. check to see whether your Holley has the lever arm
C. fab a lever arm and rod (you'll need to figure stroke length etc)
D. jack the OMP open to the 9 o'clock position (half way)

I've wired them open to the 9 o'clock position for supercharger installs before. It's a little fat at idle and a little lean at WOT. It works well enough.

Whew! Thanks for writing back!
"I saw pictures on a different forum. Somebody had strewn a cable from the throttle side of the carb, across the top of the float bowl, and down to the OMP. A real hack job."

^That^ is exactly what I have!, hahaha. I guess I'm not the only one.

WHAAAA? This is my first rotary vehicle, so I assumed it was meant to a cable setup as opposed to a rod/linkage setup. (Which I gather is how it's supposed to be?)

...Upon closer inspection, I don't have the RB Holley kit, I have a Holley mated to a RB intake manifold. (Hence the hack job cable.) My OMP lines run to ports in the intake manifold. The throttle return spring is hooked to yet another spring, and then to a stud on the block...poorly.

I called Racing Beat, they recommend that i fab it with welding cable. I could buy the full RB Holley kit. Which I would do in a heartbeart, if it was in my budget. Maybe in the near future.

Klaus44: My local Mazda dealer = fail in regards to that part# (Or anything else for that matter.) What is this "Mazda Rotary Pickup Parts Catalog" you speak of?
Is that my N00B showing? I'll take anything you got, or alternatively, is there a link to a .pdf? (:

Jeff20B: I'll try "B" and "C" later when I have more time.
"D" is intriguing, (From other forums) I gather a 1:128 premix and an iffy OMP left hooked up would work in the meantime?.
I can live with the extra smoke, the local cops here are pretty lax about those kinds of things.

My cab swap project comes first, and that looks like it's gonna be a doozy...at first I had high hopes for a simple bolt-for-bolt swap, but welding on this kind of scale will be a true learning experience for me.

Thanks!

Hey Vic!

The Parts Catalog is really helpful; (I'm blessed with a bindered copy of an original, courtesy of one of our more generous Members here).

If your local Mazda Parts Dept. isn't helpful, try to find a Mazda Parts Manager *somewhere* who is -- then, if all else fails, ask for a "VIN-# specific parts search". (Provide your specific VIN#, just like it sounds...) If still possible, this *may* include a search all the way back to Japan (!) It's helped at times in the past--.

You may want to keep an eye out on Ebaymotors, etc., for one of the RB-prepped Holleys, (if you like Holleys...), since they did a few other mods to them to make 'em more rotary-friendly.

You may just want to run premix (in whatever *proper* ratio, without the MOP) -- that way, you get to pick a nice synthetic, which ought to be an improvement over used engine oil... as long as you always remember to put it in.
