Tranny options, fix or replace?

My ol' 4 speed shifts great, but the third gear makes the truck sound like a diesel coming down the road, the 2nd gear isn't much better. No scratchy syncros (something I was used to in my RX7's), but apparently just 30 year old worn gears. Fresh fluid (syncromesh) is installed.
Since a drop-in replacement that requires no cutting is next to impossible from what I've read, has anyone tried to have these 4 speeds rebuilt? Wonder if it's even possible to find parts? Is this tranny unique to only our trucks? Insight welcome, thanks guys!

mike

Drop in replacement, no cutting required. 79-80 5-speed from an RX-7.. Thats what I have in mine right now. Only thing you have to do is fix the crossmember so that the mount will bolt up. I have built new ones out of angle iron if you need one let me know. If a tranny is not available, find a 81-83 RX-7 5 speed and use the rear output shaft housing and shifter from a 83-84 B2000 pickup. There are several options just don't resort to cutting up the truck. Remember that all the newer transmissions have the shifter even further back and will not allow the seat to be moved up in the event someone short needs to drive the truck. Good luck and if you need more info give me a call or hit me with an email.
Charles.

The truck five speed is not an overdrive, just a lot of gears for towing. I wonder what is the result when mixing up a 79-80 RX-7 tranny with the REPU's stock 4.11 ('77) to 4.62 ('74) rear gears? Anybody keep the RX-7 tranny with the stock truck rear or do you replace the rear end too?

Thanks for the replies. I was wondering of possible rebuild, in the event a 79-80 tranny was hard to find. Plus, who knows how good that used tranny will be once installed?
I'm guessing the gears ( and other internals)are the same as other trannys, just no idea which ones in case I'd like to rebuild the one I have.
And, you're right, I have no intention of cutting on my truck.

From what I've heard second hand there are extremely few parts available from MAZDA for the pre-rx7 transmissions. Not enough to rebuild a tranny.

79-80 parts are still available new.

Ok, I'm convinced. Now on the lookout for a 79-80 tranny. Patience will be a virtue in this quest, I'll bet. Hopefully I'll find one before the gears explode. I would like more info on the adaptor plate I'll need for that. Any way I could get some dimensions, etc?
JFA-Your idea sounds good as well with the angle iron..just what would I need for that? Or, I'll sure be glad to pay you for one.

I wouldn't worry about patience. These trannys are not hard to find.I just bought one for my 79 RX-7 over the winter for $125,and it was/is allegedly a low mileage unit.I didn't have a hard time finding it either as these cars were sold in large numbers, and the trannys are pretty robust. There are not many of these cars left in New England, but that is where I found my car,and where I live.

79-80 Tranny

Mike, I might be able to fix you up with a tranny soon, I blew the REPU motor up at deals gap, so its getting a rebuild. I have a 76 REPU tranny that I'm putting in mine so the 79-80 RX-7 tranny is coming out. I'll let you know when I get back from Gainesvile FL. Moving the daughter off to college. As far as strength, its pretty strong, I've pulled the tow dolly back from SC with a motorless 7 and use it to tow a trailer on a regular basis. I swapped out the 4.62 to a Courier 4.11 a couple of years ago for gas milage reasons. Still tows fine. Stopping is more of a problem that pulling. I'll get in touch with you within the next week. Guess I was wrong about the rarity. I just inquired on the RX7 club forum, got two replies within an hour, plus the one from Charles!
JF, obviously you'd be my first choice as I know yours is tried and true. Any idea of what you might want for it, plus any additional mounting that I might bum from you?

Hey, did the Rx-7 come with a OD 5 speed? Why would anyone want to put a 4 spd from an RX-7 in their truck????

This mesage from Klaus who is having trouble getting on the forum...

According to my list of US-spec Mazda driveline ratio's, the REPU 5-speed did indeed feature an 'overdrive' 5th -- (defined as going beyond the 1:1 4th gear ratio, *all* 5th gears offered were 'overdrives'...)

5th gear '76 REPU, (same as that year 5th gear offered on rx-3, 4, and Cosmo...): 0.862 , (with a 4.111 rearend, stock, same as the '75 automatic).

... By '77, they all came with a 5th ratio of 0.791, (with a 3.900 rearend).

'79 - '83 rx-7 5th gear: 0.825, (with a 3.909 rear end).

Hope this helps! (If it does, please share it with anyone else needing this info.)

....hope I can get back into participating on the Forum, sometime soon...

--Klaus

Other deals

What kinda deal have you been able to find. If you can get one for a good price, go for it. I can send you a crossmember so that it will bolt right up. The reason I say grab one if you can is, mine is not bad and if I can keep it I really would like to, for the 79 SA that I have, in case I ever need a tranny. If your other options are too expensive or don`t work out let me know. I would probably need to get about $125.00 for mine and I`ll throw in the mount. Let me know, Charles

Ok, I'm sure I can find one. One guy fairly close has a 4 speed, another had one that was just rebuilt. He's in WA state, that's the bad part..shipping.

I'll need the mounting thingy for sure, glad to pay you for one. I really appreciate it!

Was the WA one a 4 or 5 speed?

5 speed. Since he's got over $500 in it, it's going to be more that I'm willing to pay right now.
If anyone is interested, I'll email the contact info.

Charles, I know we've spoken by phone and 'sealed the deal', but I re-read this and realize that perhaps you really would like to hold on to the tranny, which I completely understand.

Let me know if you recieved my email, we'll go from there.

tranny questions

I am assuming that you have (had) the ribcase style original (4 speed) transmission? I have a pair of those from 74 rx-4's, minus bell housings. I also have a 1979
rx-7 transmission, various 80+ rx-7 transmissions, and a 1983 B-2000 transmissions. You might also try to get (or check out) the 1985 - 1987 ford bronco II / Ranger transmision, toyo-koyo manufacture, for a similar case style and possible bolt in.
