I know nothing

But I have acquired a '74 REPU instead of my '74 courier (I traded) and the REPU has a 12a w/ 5spd in it but needs a rebuild.

I want forced induction eventually but it is not essential now. I would love a 20b but will see how that goes. For now, I neeed the truck to work and would like it to have O.K. power. I am asking for suggestion on what to do/get or what to avoind in this intermediary step.

just rebuild to stock? I have heard something about "bridge porting" but dunno what it is though I've heard it is akin (in effect) to VTEC, kinda-sorta. I have a high HP DSM and would like this truck to be respectable now and eventually make it really nice as $$ permits.

Please make any commesnts and sugeestions here and I thnk you in advance for your help ion my education. I _will be_ reading as many FAQ's as I can find on the web and other sources but replies here would save me a lot of time.

Welcome, Jason !

You DO know something; obviously enough to know that trading your Courier for a REPU was the thing to do!

To keep her going on a budget, run what you've got until it's absolutely nessecary to replace... at which point, I think most of us would agree, putting a 13B back where it belongs would be a good idea.

What you choose to do really depends on your budget; if you can score a decent-running used 4-port, or perhaps a decent 6-port motor of the GSL-SE variety, those might be good bets...

Bridgeporting will not enhance the lifespan of your engine, and should only be done on a proper, fresh build anyway. Then, you'll need to get some taller gearing to truly take advantage of the powerband... Besides, what with the cost of fuel skyrocketing, you might want something more streetably affordable...

In the off chance you don't yet have electronic ignition, you'll definitely want to go there... and, once you know which engine you'll be sticking with for a while, the RB header is the #1 bang-for-buck, solid performance investment... followed by an intake setup superior to stock.

Put AmSoil synthetic gear lube in your trans. and rearend, and forget about 'em. (For all intents and purposes).

:)

O.K. well the 12a in there apparently has no compression in the last combustion chamber thingy-majigger (not sure on terminology you guys use). so the truck does not work in current form. I want to *ideally* put in a 20b but that is out of the budget for a little while.

I guess if someone wanted to make my life easy, they would point me to either the engine setup I'd need to be somewhere in the 300whp range. I like turbos but NA is fine too as long as I get where I am trying to go.

Also, where can I find a wealth of info in a concise format so I can bone up on my rotary info? I know for DSM's we have www.vfaq.com . You guys have anything like that? Thanks a lot!

What you likely want to do...

...is get yourself a copy of the 'catalogue/technical manual' most applicable to the oldschool rotaries put out by Racing Beat; there's a wealth of technical info. there, all of it race-proven over the years. They have a website, as well...

Following the links around the Mazda Rotary Webring will also prove educational. Try clicking on the 'Rotary Top 150' red-and-yellow box at the bottom of this page...

Try delving into past threads here at this forum... lots of good reading, much of which will be helpful in the long run...

You might want to get in touch with some of the other shops/engine builders out there, such as Pineapple Racing in Portland, or Atkins in WA. state...

With enough money, you can do damn near anything.

Another thought:

A lot can be learned from reading through what's up for auction on Ebaymotors under certain searches, such as 'Mazda Rotary'...

There's a nice-sounding non-stock '79 seven on there right now --with a 'hybrid' 4-port 13B in it that would make a great REPU motor-- but, alas, it's in VA. ...

You might be pleasantly surprised how thrilled you'd be --at least for a while-- with 180-200 reliable horses, and enough $$$ left to enjoy 'em... :)

I have a friend who owes me several big favors. I'm cashing in on them in the form of a working 13b NA engine.

I am actually considering selling it if I get enough to motivate me... I need to get another trackbike so I can spend more time on the track...
