Ignition Retard Relay
WSM specifies its supposed to retard the leading ignition 20 degrees but does not say when this happens or why. The 77 wiring diagram shows the relay switching between the "-" trailing coil and the "-" leading coil, which suggests the trailing would be advanced to the leading timing. Does anybody know?

OK, just to close this thread, I met a guy in town who used to work at the dealer when the trucks were new. He says the retard relay retards both lead and trail ignition (hard to remember) about 20 degrees during the warm-up period only, controlled by a choke switch. The theory is a retarded ignition will heat up the engine faster, and get it to a more acceptable smog condition sooner. That would explain why after my conversion to electronic ignition, and failure to hook up the retard circuit, the truck takes a lot longer to warm up. Maybe the engine will run smoother also during the warmup cycle.
I'm going to the Bay Area in April to view and dissect (not literally) an all original 77 in hopes of finding out how the circuit is wired, and possibly getting the circuit to work with the electronic distributor.

I think you need a points distributor with three sets of points in it for this feature to work. Either way, good luck getting it to work on an electronic dizzy.
