Craigs red repu....
....has a little bit of a cough. This is my 6th rotary I've owned and the only original one as well. All the others had an after market carb and a header so they were pretty easy to tune. Here is the problem. The truck pops out some small back firing in between shifts thru out all rpm's. I don't even know where to start. Any suggestions?

Small exhaust leak maybe? At least worth checking out the areas around the manifold .

Check to see the throttle plates close at idle and check the de-cel valve. Racing Beats early catalog touched on this if you have one available.

Aside from all the obvious issues...
A bit more of a reach, but I had the same issue with an '83 RX-7 here (a customer's car), completely bone stock, and it turned out to be slightly obstructed air bleeds in the carb. Floats being out of wack from one another can also cause it, due to a slightly rich situation.

Thanks.....
....for the help guys. I definitely have a starting point now.The big bummer is I can't work on it for a while. I fell off my roof on dec. 18th and broke my right foot and arm. As soon as I get it fixed I'll post what the problem was.

Really.... I'm coming out to San Diego the week of the 13th this month. Any chance I may be able to see the truck in person?
Neal.

No more cast's or crutches....
......I'm finally healing up and getting around better. Did a few things to my 75 which I'm going to sell here soon and started working on the 74. I went thruogh the emissions section of the manual and checked everything one by one. Turns out I had a few vacuum leaks,a bad ventilation valve and a bad altitude compensater. Results, she runs alot better but still backfires a little. If I baby it, it pops between shifts. If I run her hard (preferred)it only pops occasionally. Also, the small vacuum line that comes off the air cleaner to the air control valve. I took it of and plugged it at the a.c. valve, revd it up and no popping. I'm going to drive it like that today and see what happens.
Thanks again to Wvoight for the parts!

Good to hear you're healing up, Max!
Sounds like you're finding out precisely how and why rotaries got 'known' for backfiring in stock trim, back in 'the day'...
Why not keep your '75, and make it the modified, bridgeported one?
