LSD

I've spent a good deal of time under my '77 the last month, and I'm am more impressed just how sturdy these trucks were built.
I seem to be using mine more and more. (I've towed old cars, and played mtn. goat getting to radio tower sites.)
Anyway, this Truck just cries out for a Limited slip diff. Have any of you successfully installed LSD? Or perhaps know of a good resource?
It seems the Torsen unit installed in 3rd gen. Rx-7's would be just the thing.

LSD...hey, where's the trippy icon for this topic???

Rob Golden of Pineapple Racing in Portland OR. likely has the answers to the LSD dilemma...I recall him telling me he thought he knew of a setup that'd fit, all done for around $400... if that's still anywhere near current.
On another topic: would the 'party from Wisconsin' who left no phone # on my answering machine last night please leave me with contact info.? I'd be happy to provide any info. I can--I even return long-distance calls! Congrats. on inheriting the '77, and (if you're reading this), condolences on your loss as well. --Klaus (541) 683-6204

RacingBeat

Quite a bit more expensive, but Racing beat has a Race Limited Slip Diff. I don't know if it will work in the REPU's pumkin (check Felix's faq)

<A HREF=http://www.racingbeat.com/resultset.asp?PartNumber=13501> Racingbeat's website </A>

$840 is the price...

The Mazda Factory Race Limited Slip Differential is best suited for racing only. It utilizes cam-actuated clutches, which afford positive slip control. This differential interchanges exactly with the stock unit and can be used with any ratio on 1971-83 applications in a RX-2, RX-3 or RX-7. We strongly recommend the use of a temperature gauge on the differential housing to monitor the temperature. Sustained temperatures over 2000 degrees F will shorten its life noticeable, and temperatures over 320 degrees F can possibly7 cause failure.

When changing from a standard differential to this limited slip diff, it is wise to have two (2) new differential side bearings (Mazda P/N 0221-27-305A) at hand since it is very difficult to remove the original side bearings from the original differential without damaging them.

Note: .125-inch must be removed from the inner end of each axle shaft to clear the differential on all 1980 and earlier cars.

Best I remember they had 4 catagories of rear ends for the rotary vehichles and the trucks were not interchangable with any others. Nor were the RX4's.
The Mazda REPU rearend is supposedly a small version of the Ford 9'inch rearend. I bet that there has to be some LSD unit from a later B-series or a Courier.
I wonder if there is a Ford Courier fan club? We might have a good reason to find out.

Regarding a Ford Courier club... i have not even found parts site for the damn things! At least the REPU has *some* parts in common with Mazda RX's... I can't find anything on the web for the Fords...

Getting back on subject, if it is a small version of a 9' ford, it might be very interesting to see some comparisons between the two.

Contact old Ford people for courier referrals...somewhere aroud here I thought I posted two 'obsolete' Ford houses I used--Green Sales Co., I forget the other right now...could look it up again. Doubt courier ever had LSD. REPU rearend is beefiest ever offered by Mazda, certainly before later model B-series, anyway--much bigger axle than rx 2, 3, or 4.
Why not go Ford 8 or 9 inch? Lotsa hotrod stuff for them, any and all ratios, LSD too, no doubt...it's what folks race on when less won't survive... Certain friendly parts guys at certain helpful Ford dealerships might have ideas for other 'obsolete' Ford parts sources... just don't mention Mazda's!
"Yeah, I've got this '74 Courier, one helluva truck, just love it, need these parts..."

One thing that kept me away from the Ford 8 or 9 inch is the weight... untill I got my REPU. I bet they weigh about the same. It'll be what I'll use if I ever do a 20B in my REPU, or maybe even with a decent 13B (so I can change gear ratios and have LSD).

That would make sense...

...now I remember, way back in high school, when my pal Robbie got this Pinto wagon w./ a Hi-Po Mustang 289 w./ 302 heads in it, he had a Mustang II "V-8 rear end" in it too... that must be the one! Of course these units have some mass to 'em... but if rotary racers running trick rx2's and 3's use 'em, why can't we? (Ford 8", that is) AND-- the local specialty rearend shop in anytown, USA will be familiar with it!
