93 B2600i 4x4 Rotary swap

I woul like to swap a NA13B or a 20B into my 93 2600i 4x4. I would like to know what tranny options there might be. I want to stick with the 2600i drivetrain if possible, because I don't think a RX-7 trans could accomidate a married transfercase, and the gearing wouldn't be ideal for offroad use.

I dunno if this applies to the 4x4 tranny.. but on a b2600i you can just swap out the bell housing.. and then the rotary will bolt right up.. you will need to make new engine mounts though..

The rear diff is also compatible with the REPU's third member. Not sure about the front. 460, anyone? :)

Given that the big 4 in the 4WD was a Mitsubishi unit, and Ford is using a Mitsu. transmission in some older Bronco 2/Ranger things, that tranny may not be Mazda. That would add problems in a bell housing swap. My '90 Bronco 2 has a Mitsu 5 speed transmission, and a transfer case from another source, coupled to a V6.
You may find that a newer Mazda transmission has a transfer case available, and I saw a Repu advertised with a Miata transmission in it. I don't know why they went that route...The early Rx7 five speed was almost bulletproof. Still, it adds possible answers.

The early RX-7 5 speed died in my REPU. I'd say the FB style ('81-'85) is stronger.

I was not aware that the repu thirdmember fit on a B2200 differential.. I know a first gen LSD unit can be put on a b2200 differential..

As far as the truck engine being mitsubishi.. that is correct.. but only for certain years..

a 93 B2600i will have a Mazda engine... the carburated B2600 is the one that had the 2.6 mitsubishi engine.. and the tranny is a mazda r5md.. or somethin like that.. I dont have my book handy..

B2600i can house an REPU 3rd member, as in the B2000 with a 13B that's for sale (mentioned on the other thread in this section).

The B2600's both carbed and fuel injected are Mitsubishi engines to my knowledge. Mazda never produced a 2.6L in house that I am aware of, but I could be wrong. Mazda (as far as I know) had some input into the fuel injection setup with Chrysler, since at the time (going into 1989 model year production) those two were Mitsubishi's main customers on the engines. TheRangerStation.com has lots of info as far as what engines/transmissions/t-cases went into the 4x4 Rangers and Bronco II's... would definitely help with matching stuff up out of trucks post '94 when Ford took over production of Mazdas trucks. I was surprised I had missed this thread before, because I have a 1987 B2600 here that I am probably going to graft my '76 REPU cab and bed onto the B2600 frame after I stretch the cab. Not going to be easy, I'm sure, but I figured with stretching the cab, why not go the extra distance and do it 4x4, especially considering parts for the B2600 are more plentiful than those for the REPU. I think I am going to use a Series IV RX-7 13B with it's stock fuel injection as well, to bump up the HP and torque a bit.

About RX-7 transmissions...

Jeff is absolutely correct. The FB ('81-5) transmissions were definitely stronger than the SA models ('79 & '80), and of course, the strongest (slightly stronger synchros and gears) is the M5(M5IV?) out of the GSL-SE. Even though the '79 & '80 trans' seemed to last a little longer here and there, they could not handle additional power being put to them as easily as a post '81. I believe there were even some subtle chnages made to synchro cone cuts in mid-'82, but have no idea where the TSB is saying that, I just seem to remember reading it last year.

An '82 tranny has stood up to a Camden supercharger on a streetported four port 13B and has lived for years of occasional driving with no signs of getting weaker, unlike my SA tranny every time I'd open the secondaries. Man, what a difference!
