89 B2200 Rotary Transplant

I have recently been asked to research what would be involved to install a rotary engine (preferably a 13b-REW) into a 1989 B2200 X-tended cab p/u. I am a complete newbie when it comes to doing this. I have been told stories from one extreme to the other as to how simple or not so simple this may be to do.

I discovered this forum in my wanderings and it certainly appears that there are many knowledgable people here. I would really appreciate being pointed in the right direction to get started on this project. Are there any websites that cover this kind of procedure in detail or are there any other references available?

Thank You in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

Well, it is not "easy" for a noob... hell, even a straight up engine replacement (stock for stock) isn't that easy.

There is a lot of fabrication.. Engine mounts, transmission mounts, fuel system, water cooling system, intercooling, oil cooling system, steering rack clearance, electrical system.

Each of these things are easily surmountable, but it isn't a weekends worth of work, more like 6-9 months for a starter.. more than that if you run out of steam... hell it'd take 6-8 weeks for an experienced engine swapper to do all the work.

Biggest thing is keeping momentium up once the project has started, and over planning the budget by 50-100%.. (ie, if you think it'll take $5000, it will most likely take $7500-$10000 to complete)

Thanks for the reply.
My first post was kind of misleading --- what it is that is new to me is this custom job of putting a rotary into the pick-up. I have been involved in the auto repair business for quite a few years, so the actual work does not scare me.
I guess to be more specific -- what I am looking for --- is what original parts in the truck can I use? Can I use the tranny that is in the truck? I am guessing from your reply that the mounting system will have to be fabricated (doesn't happen to just drop in and fit in the original mounting loacation?)

What other things should I be aware of that are specific to this job? (oil cooling -- etc)

Thanks for your patience and assistance.

I think the bell housing from an RX-7 Transmission will bolt right up to the rest of the tranny in your truck... (Ie, frankenstein your tranny, I'm about 70% sure of this. Or you may be able to fab up an adapter that would go between the engine block and the tranny...

Otherwise, you'll need the Tranny from the RX-7, and the mounting hardware fabricated around that. You'll need a drive shaft to fit in the case that you use a RX tranny too.

As far as the bellhousing from an rx7 fitting on your trucks transmission that is correct, although i'm not sure if the bellhousing from an FD will fit on the transmission in fact i'm pretty sure it wont. The N/A transmissions from second gens and the B2200's transmission are almost identical except for the bellhousing and tail housing. what i did what took an rx7 transmission, and swapped the tail housing and intermediate housing from the truck onto the rx7 transmission. this may work for you however i dont' know if the bolt pattern for the FC is the same as the FD.
