Just a guess...:

Aluminum valve cover might be non-stock, or at least not original to your motor?
What can the oldest guy in your dealer's parts dept. tell you about it?

May be an early Pinto unit. Made in Germany for the european sourced Capri, and a well respected racing engine. I don't quite remember if the Mazda/courier used that one. Replaced by the US "metric" 2.3 which for sure was used in the pickups.
If it is the German ford unit, many racing parts are out there. Ever hear of formula ford? Buddy of mine massaged a stock pinto to make enough HP to twist the body apart. Out dragged a GTO! I was with him when he did it.

Checked my Chiltons and it showed a picture of a timing chain on that motor. Pinto had a belt. Must be a Mazda unit. I don't think they used anyone else's till later.

Mazda

Most likely its a 1800 Mazda unit. I've had couriers and B2000's and both had an aluminum valve cover with OHC and raised firing order. The early couriers had 1600, with later ones being 1800 then the B2000 came out with 2000s. I have some parts for a courier if you are in need of anything. Let me know what you need and I'll make you a great deal just to get it out of my way. Also have an 86 B2000 thats getting ready to go on the auction block if anyone is interested. CHEAP.. doesn't run, got a hole in the side of the block where it threw a rod.

What motor...

Hi.

I think it is a "MA" motor. It was a 2 litre that came with alot of Mazda vehicles.

Check the side of the block (cast iron), and see if it's got "MA" forget into it with raised letters.

Have a nice day.

Check for old script m

I have a 2000 engine in my 1973 courier. The biggest differance between the 1800 and 2000 is 1 inch of block hieght. oh, and a bigger water pump. Value clover, oil pan, and intake manifold are all interchangeable.
