Production numbers ?

I found this info in my 1974 REPU parts manual.
Is this right?

month starting SN Qty
173
12/73 100173 204
01/74 100377 1118
02/74 101495 1097
03/74 102592 1068
04/74 103660 959
05/74 104619 1494
06/74 106113 1736
07/74 107849 850
08/74 108699 1404
09/74 110103 2182
10/74 SPA136-112286 1st 1975

Total 1974's 12285
Anyone have production numbers for 1975,1976 and 1977?

Yea, Ive seen that as you might guess....

but, if the 75's started in Oct., 74, then how would one explain my 75 with a number SPA136-108857? According to that schedule, my truck was built with the 74's in Aug 74.

I read what it says, and it doesn't make sense to me. I once emailed Mazda asking such a question and they responded that they would pull the archives and check for me, but after repeated attempts to get the info, I gave up. They failed to respond after the initial promise of assistance.

Go figure...

PA136 is 1974
SPA136 is 1975
The manual(12/74) I have said that 1975 production started with SPA136 112286, But I think they started over with SPA136 100001? I have talked to another 1975 owner on the site and he has the same question?Do all 1975's start with SPA136.
Does anyone have a 1975 parts manual?
Thanks

I agree...

that they probably started over. Yes, as far as I know all 75's started with (S)PA136...

Thee is a thread on this subject in the database that discusses this, I can't remember exactly all the details, but 75 is the only year to add the (S).

I have a 75 manual on Microfiche, it was printed in Feb 1979. It shows the following:

1975 models begin:
Oct 74 SPA136112286
Nov 74 SPA136122309 for 10023 units
Dec 74 ------------
Jan 75 SPA136122359 + 50 units
Feb 75 SPA136122366 + 7 units
Mar 75 SPA136122369 + 3 units

I don't get it, I find it hard to beleive they produced over ten thousand units in a month, and then produced a few each month thereafter, and that still leaves my SPA136108857 missing in action???

the info you seek, here is.... I always wanted to sound like yoda ONCE in my life.

the deal is this mazda got screwed in 74 due to the gas mileage performance reports so they got stuck with thousands of vehicles sitting in Japan at the factory waiting to ship, they even sent factory workers out to try and sell cars instead of make more. If you have a late 74 parts microfiche or parts manual it shows that most of the 75s were actually manufactured in early 74.... ???? All 75 mazda rotary vin numbers added an S to the front of the vin, why because the 74 vin numbers had been posted and for them to be able to sell the vehicle as a NEW 75 it needed 2 things one to have been built(finished) in the 75 model year and to have a new vin number, the easiest way to do this was to replace all the body tags and stamp a S in front of the vin number on the firewall hence the vehicle was "finished" in 75 as for the crazy numbers in the manual i can only assume that the small monthly production were trucks that were specifically ordered. There have been reports of crazy 75 mazda rotaries that have 2 door trim tags with the 75 tag on top of the 74 also many of the emissions stickers on 75s say 74 or have a 75 sticker right on top of a 74, as for the numbers on the trucks if you can wait until i am back from IRAQ i have the microfiches for all 4 years and can put together decent numbers.

Not all...

74s were sold due to the then current gas crisis and the EPA rating of 10 MPG killed the sales of the rotary truck. A lot of the 75s if not all are 74s with the vin plates changed and the emissions updated. Mazdas information on the production of the truck is not reliable, they kept very poor records.

The story is starting to make sense.....

to me now. The tags clearly show the (S) stamped in with a different "font". It also helps explain why nobody seems to have any 76 models. I wonder where they fit into the scheme? The numbers above also seem to support the building of many more trucks than the "15,000" widely thought number. Hmmm....

I checked my fiche issued in 79, and it still shows the numbering inconsistancies. You would have thought that they would have least corrected the later editions. It makes me want to check my fiches for 76 and 77.

I don't know if this is part of the confusion or a sloppy license clerk, but I have a "74" with a (S)PA #, or at least that is what the title states. I should look over the tags to see what I really have.

On the frame.....

Forward of the left front wheel, on the outside. Look good, it usually buried in dirt or undercoating.

Ok, I checked the Microfiche on the 76 model.

and it reveals this:

Month, Year: Serial #

Dec, 75: 150001
Jan, 76: 150071
Feb, 76: 150641
Mar, 76: 150647
Apr, 76: 150647
May, 76: ------

This shows that they built only 647 1976 models, and that would support why they are so few around.

I have a 77 Microfiche issued as "Final edition", and they removed the serial number sequence info page, so I have no numbers for the 77 models. I will have to dig for my actual parts manual to see if that reveals something. I boxed it some months ago.

I can't verify that it matches the info on any of my 76s right now, I do know that my primary 76 is really a 76 just don't remeber the vin, i also know that the POS white 77 that was recently for sale on ebay in San Antonio is a 76 (it was a one of my parts trucks... that he just had to have) I know of 2 other 76s but do not have access to them to determine if there numbers match up (give me a couple of months to get away from IRAQ and i can verify)

On the 77's......

I have two and they are numbered PA236101110 and PA236101115. They are five serial numbers apart, and were probably built on the same day. Kinda cool.

Starting to look like...

a production run of maybe 16,000? Possibly a little more? or less?
Makes you wonder just how many are left. We are rather a small group of enthusiast compared to almost any other collector vehicle.
