God, this is exactly why I don't want a single OEM part on my front end. Ideally I'll be able to develop or obtain glass replacements for the entire front end (except bumper I guess).

A body shop can set you right, but its going to cost a bit of change. THe bumper is a total bitch but the valence and pender can be easily fixed. I'd opt for one of hte glass valences if/when they become available. At this rate though, I'll have developed one for everyone before this other thing comes through. Mines dinged up but its good enough for mould purposes, I can work that out in the mould.

I'm very sorry to see this. Some asshole w/o insurance hit my cabrio last year so I know what you're going thru.

I don't even wanna see those pics!

Sounds like one of life's harshest lessons ever... If not full coverage, then perhaps 'special interest' registration/coverage -- around here that allows for driving occaisionally 6 months outta the year...
Hope you got the real deal on his info! You should've jacked him up for his entire car... Just as well he's not insured: you can't sue someone else's insurance Co. ... Get a copy of the police report ASAP. Get the three most expensive, zero bs all-metal speciality repair shop's estimates in writing. Just do it! Just because the hotel's not responsible doesn't mean he's not. Research this guy: find out where he works, who his folks are, everything. Communicate with him only in writing, and only by certified mail. Keep a copy of everything! Even though a small claims judgement may be uncollectable in the short term, it could provide precedent/leverage later. Get professional legal advice if you can afford it. Do find out all you can/keep tabs on the guy. Don't 'harass' him by being audible or visible!
Best of luck, Clardon. I feel for ya!

Here's your parts:

Ebaymotors item #2414294813; ends May 10th... complete looking, and not yet bid up too darn high... Sacto's even a doable distance down I-5...?
You might also want to do a search on completed parts auctions, and print out what they went for as documentation of the value in parts of your loss...
Then again, you could just strip those 20" rims offa that wannabe's boo-ick... and wrap the rubber around his neck!
*Remember to save your 'junk' parts!!!*

This is your chance...

...to work it hard, while you still can. I'd submit NO estimate to anyone until I had my three favorite, no-holds-barred ones (likely the three most expensive). You can always cut slack later! It's one of those things where the initiative counts for a lot...same goes for a small claim, or other legal action. I'd work on the cops, too. The report not being filed/filled out properly isn't right, and wouldn't back you up legally, either. What would've happened if you hadn't been on it so quick? Mr. hit and run would've been GONE. I take it there was no note left on your truck... I'd go to the biggest Mazda dealer in your region for one of the estimates. There's a bezel on ebaymotors right now that's already bid up to $60... Collecting long distance is always a bitch--unless the guy's genuinely honest and responsible... How about quotes from Hayes and Atkins, or their favorite resto specialists? Even if you end up supplying the part, it's important to establish rarity and fair market value...
Good luck! --K

YIKES!

That damage has got me thinking, I've been invited to bring up my 77 repu to the Midwest Rotary Rally in August. Assistance was offered for transporting it there, because the tires are orig. and I don't trust them (its 30 miles to the rally). I think I will remove the front plastic parts, haul the truck myself and reassemble the items when I get there. Best of luck on getting the damage fixed.

COSMO PICTURE

God I want a Cosmo so bad I can taste it.

I can convince my girlfriend that this would be our 'practical car' since it has back seats :)

So far I haven't owned anything with more than two seats and it has been the cause of some consternation in the past :)

Well at least you know the rims on the guys car are worth $800-$1000 so he can sell them to partially pay you off, but if he bought them in the first place he probably has some $$ since he has spent it on 20's

He'll never sell those rims.

If he was that motivated to make good, he would've worked it out with you on the spot. Do you know if the boo-ick is even in his name? Sue him, and you can bet it won't be! Cops are only human, too... what people remember down the road does tend to change... it's all about initiative, tenacity, and ducks in a row, at this point. Documentation, documentation, documentation. A strong "offense"...priceless in legal matters! Don't allow insult to be added to injury--if you do, it'll be because you allowed it to happen. The burden of proof of ownership of ANY assets falls on the prevailing party... this can be next to impossible to achieve... Best to work the hit and run bit, so that it's not being a BIG problem to him is the motivator to do right by you NOW. (Just my humble opinion). Unless, of course, you're convinced of his integrity... but we've all been scammed before...! Plenty of 'enterprising' guys out there, no doubt, got their 'pimpmobile' rims despite all lack of (visible) means of support... kinda like the wings, blue lights, and stickers sometimes...
